Hey guys the Speedometer in my 69 Velle, while I was driving down the road, starting making a clicking sound and it would go from my actual speed to about 20 miles above it and back to my normal speed. Its just bouncing up and down. Is a gear broking inside the gauge or whats up? Is it easily fixable? Its a stock speedometer.

Most likely the cable has lost lubrication and is spinning dry. Unclip the cable from your speedo head and disconnect the fitting at the tranny. The inner drive cable can be pulled from the speedo end of the outer cable. I've used lithium grease to lubricate the cable with good results. Get a glob of grease in your hand and just pull the cable through your fist, it's messy but it works. Re-install the inner cable in its' jacket and connect to the tranny and speedo head, problem solved.

Except its going up not down, it did this once the other day but after parking the car for a day and starting back up it stopped and went back to normal but now its doing it constantly.

The cable isn't broken yet, but it will without lube. The inner cable is made from multiple strands of spirally wound wire which allows flexibility and a certain amount of rotational 'give' when it needs lubrication.

Ive done a lot of mechanical work on my car but I have zero knowledge or experience on original gauges, any tips/pics or links to walk me through this?

Thanks bud, you think its just the cable? I was afraid some gear tooth was busted, like I said I have no knowledge of gauges lol.

The speedometer in my 68 just started doing the same thing. I replaced the whole cable. I even put lithium grease on the new one, and the speedometer does the same jumping. I have another speedometer for it, but it's going out to a gauge guy first. I want to know it's in perfect working order, before I take the dash apart.

Hmmm well I ordered a cable for it so lets see what happens. Anyone know of a good place that fixes/restores these gauges? Preferably around Texas but ok if not.
