That's very interesting. Thank you for explaining that. Are there any documents stating what colors were available as a special option, or was it like Porsche and just bring in your favorite shade of lipstick and we'll match it? Also, Dale, I saw that you mentioned for '69 only. What was the availability for 1970 and up? Were there any special order colors for 1964-1968? Thanks again for the help.
The '69 only' referred to Daytona Yellow and Monaco Orange being factory colors for SS cars. The colors were certainly available for 70 and later but as special order paint only.
According to Jim Mattison, a contributor on the Yenko site who worked at the GM Fleet & Special Order Department,
any color available in a given year except the Cadillac Firemist colors due to the coarse metallic content. That meant not only any GM color, but Ford, MoPar, DuPont, PPG, anybody's color that was available in a given year or from a prior year. Jim Mattison said in one post they often referred to Monaco/Hugger Orange as Road Commission Orange. Pontiac's Verdoro Green was a popular color for a number of years, an example of a
71 El Camino from Alaska painted this color is on my site.
I have a 67 Fremont SS396 tag with -- coded on it so I'm sure they went back that far at least. It should be noted too that 'special order paint' wasn't reserved for the individual that wanted a different color but it applied to fleet orders such as cabs, police cars, highway commission vehicles, etc.
