SI vs CS alternator?

Hello to all and let me apologize for the dumb questions up front.
I have searched and read quite a lot here on the forums and the tech articles regarding SI and CS alternators.
I currently have a stock setup (external regulator) in my '71. Should I change over to a CS? Or do they make an internally regulated SI alternator?
How does one tell the difference? Do the all SI alts have the same plug? Whats the difference between a CS and a SI plug?
Thanks

The SI alt is internally regulated. Stock alt from the 60's and early 70's would most likely be the DN, externally regulated, alt.

Why are you asking if you should change to the CS? Do you have electric fans or other loads that require more amps than the stock alt? Are you having problems with your current charging system? I'm still running stock alt with external regulator but I don't have any add on equip that requires me to change to a different alt.

No real problems - just that listening to those on theses boards seem to indicate that the newer alts are better.
Im not running anything other than stock along with the radio and amp so maybe its best to leave it alone?

Newer alts put out more amps and they definitely put out more at low rpms. Do you need that? Some do, electric cooling fans, electric fuel pumps, etc. I guess if you want a newer alt because it makes you feel good, go for it. On the other hand if everything is working good and you're not having any problem, what's the point?

If everything is working fine, but would like to improve, for a Plug & Play, swap out the mechanical voltage regulator for an electronic one, Wells/Duralast P/N VR715 for about $20. Don't forget the ground strap on the one mounting bushing, if equipped, otherwise, hard mount it to the radiator support, and don't worry about the noise suppression capacitor on the side for the new VR.

Thanks for all the input. Im thinking I will leave it alone for now - you know, "if it aint broke, dont fix it"! Lat er on if it becomes an issue, then we'll see about an upgrade.
Thanks again
