Bought a set of Scorpion 1.7's to replace the Crane Energizers (Silver) I have been running. They appear to be a well built rocker. A little heavier than the Crane Gold we compared them to, but most of the weight seems to be in the trunnion area, so don't think this will cause any real issues. Of particular note is the diameter of the roller tip which measures .600" diam. Did mock up on Vince's 509 with the AFR heads. Not sure if it's the effect of the large diameter roller, but the pattern across the valve tip was wider but centered. Pics will follow..

No, they didn't fail. But I am stepping up to a lot more cam and had a chance to pick these up at a very good price. The Energizers are alum castings. I think they are very good for lower spring pressures, but have seen where others had issues as the spring pressures went up. One of those items where who knows. I have ran them for 4 years now on two different motors (only couple thousand miles total though) but only with a flat tappet hyd or a hyd roller, never over .600 lift or over 400# over the nose and never over 6000 RPM.

The Scorpions are MUCH larger, like huge. They seem a little heavier, not much though. The roller tip wheel especially is large.

There are two for ea. side that are clearanced for the valve cover boss.
Are yours still that close ?
I used them with aluminum heads, so just wondering ?

Good qaulity for the price IMO - Mine were $199 new.

I had 4 BBC Scorpions break right at the rocker tip in a hyd roller app had maybe 500 cruisin miles.
IMHO buy a crower or if you have the bucks Jesel Sportsman shaft.
If ya want the Jesel I can help you out were located at the Pennridge airport.

they roller pin was probly too tight a press.
I contacted Scorpion and returned the customers set which they replaced which he Ebayed off.
He purchased a set of Crane Golds and now has 2yrs on them or more with no problems.

Hi Bill, we've been working with these guy's and their products for some time now and know a few of their present employees, who, by the way were some of Crane's ex's, who have been there with the Stopanio family who owns Scorpion, for some time now! This family includes "racer's", not just business-owners!

The components appear to be really decent pieces, and with all the "futuristic" equipment they've invested in, they will be able to compete "heads-up" with many of the "off-shore" pieces in the cost arena.

The ones we've tested to date, mostly BB's, have performed better than expected, when considering the costs.

(Add) They include in the sets also, a couple of rockers that have the "corners" already trimmed to clear the bolt hole in the valve covers towards the intake side!

I would add this also, the one's we've measured here have always had an "edge" with respect to the accuracy of the ratio's. Never had a single one below the number and have found, if anything, the lifts are slightly "better than advertised"!

We keep these on the shelf for "in-house" use in the 1.7/1.8 combo's pre-packaged, as we feel these will be a good mover!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. To address the colors, the "blue's" are the 1.7's for the BB's and the ones in the photo's above, the "silver's", are the 1.8's for the BB's also. We like the "color-coding" deal, some other brands you never know the ratios beforehand??

Double P.S. These guy's are into the both the "flat-tappet" lifter scene with their "High Acicular Carbide Faced" pieces AND the roller series, both "retro- hyd's" and "mechanical's" which include the +.300" tall''s!

Mine are stamped 1.7 ratio in the natural finish. Possible the color coding is something they changed over to. May explain why I got a good deal on these. No doubt, these are new and very nicely finished. Also, two rockers were clearanced in the set.

PS - these are going on the 469" motor with the 245/252, .651/.651 cam and the 9.5" converter on the shelf. Kinda decided to hold off on dropping the 540 in this car. Have a feeling it will drop to low 11's with the "small" motor. Should have it all together by the end of the week.

GRN69CHV - If you still have the rockers handy, I'm curious how the geometry compares since I have heard that the Cranes are supposed to be better in this regard. When you compare the locations of the roller tip centerline, trunion centerline, and pushrod cup in relationship to one another, do the two rockers look any different?

Cranes are up at Vince's house - already installed on his motor. We did a quick side by side, didn't notice anything that really stuck out with the exception of the details I listed. Only thing I can assume is that the larger roller wheel will raise the rocker and probably require a slightly longer pushrod. I will do some more thorough checking when I get into my own motor.

The larger wheel would tilt the rocker back, requiring a shorter pushrod actually, but we dont know if the pushrod cup was compensated for this. The was a different pattern when we did a quick check between the 2, and the Scorpion acted like it had a shorter pushrod, so there is a slight difference somewhere with the Scorpion (in relation to the Crane).
