thought i would just share........kinda a tip maybe if you will.......
helping a buddy put together a 12 to 1 motor with 305 comp. cam 350 sbc......i was invited over to help ....he just wanted to slap the bottom end together......"its all fresh it should be just fine"......of course i said lets check everything...armed with my measuring tools...come to find out the bottom end was way loose........ how about .004 on the rods......being the tightest.....and .003 on the mains being the tightest measurement......so the buddy was upset.....he had to have the bottom end redone.......crank to far underground.....
few weeks later i came by since i knew he was working on it, "well i got the bottom back together" time to slap the heads on......of course i said well let me check them out...."no need to they werent run very long on the motor and they are good"....trying not to get him upset because he is in a big hurry to get the motor together......i said well lets at least check for retainer and guide clearence and run some water down the runner to make sure the valves are not leaking........i told him to clean them up and i will be back with some tools, i got back things was looking ok till some water was comming out of a water jacket???????hey water is just in the intake runner....he thought the water was left over from it being tore down......oh no i said there something wrong here.....after taping off the water jacket holes around the head.......i put some air to the water jackets and i had bubbles comming up the intake runner.......i located a bad seat.......
he was ticked off....."man i was going to have this motor running tonight before you came by"........moral of this story.(and there can be many others).those who just want to slap parts on without checking everything will pay a higher price in the long run......
just think guys....all the time and money put in this engine......and if he would have just put it together with out checking it would have had very low oil pressure, and would have water in the oil.......what a waste it would have been.....
i treat every engine like a unknown object....i would check it over and over again til i know for sure what it is......
