I've been in the circle track sport for a few years now and I don't have access to a dyno, but here's what we do and have never, never had a major machanical problem with any of our SBC's....

1) Remove inner valve springs..
2) Set timing close.
3) Fill bowls full of fuel.
4) Fire engine up IMMEDIATLEY go to 2000 rpm.
5) Check timing with dial back light - ~36* at 3000.
6) Vary rpm.... 2500.... 1800..... 2300...... for 20 minutes.
7) Shut off, dump oil, cut filter open.
8) Install inner spings and adjust valves.
9) Install new Napa Gold or Wix filter add 20w-50 oil.
10) Restart engine and adjust timing.
11) Check fluids, load car on trailor.
12) Unload car, put some heat in the engine.
13) Check for leaks.
14) Hit the track with a few easy hot laps.
15) Pin it's ears back and have fun....... :)

Never had a major mechanical problem doing this....
