Removing stock A/C and just retain heater

Hello you guys. I hate the stock A/C on my car. That evaporator takes a ton of room and makes the engine bay look really crowded. Also, having that huge A/C compressor on the driver side with hoses swinging over the front of the engine, that is so stupid. The compressor weighs a ton too, I took it off. Would I be able to remove the A/C and just retain a heater without removing the engine? I eventually plan to use a GM serpentine belt system that relocates the A/C compressor to the passenger side, where it should have been originally. The alternator is going to be on the driver side. The heater is all I really need. Thx for any comments. Edward.

Thanks for the comments. When I bought the car, the dealer said the A/C was not working and that it needed a new compressor. I still have the compressor sitting in the garage. What a boat anchor! Will check the date code on it. Wonder how much it's worth? If I ever do need A/C, which I doubt, will go with Vintage Air. The guy I bought the car from recommended I do that, he said it would work way better than the stock system, which uses the old and obsolete R12 refrigerant.

Someone has WAAAAAAAAAAAAY misinformed you!!!!!
Our 70 conv has a 100% stock factory AC system------------ON R12!!!!!!
And yes, it has been totally rebuilt. Several years ago, some of the Chevelle folks recommended using Classic Auto Air in Tampa, Fla. I removed the complete system on the pass side and sent it to them. Bought a new dryer, bought a flush kit from O'Reilly as recommended, flushed the remainder of the system, put the system on the pump for 18hrs, shut if off and let it sit for 6hrs and the gauges never moved. So I charged it with 12 (I have a pretty good stash because my other cars are on R12). It puts out 38-40deg at the center vent. I did all this in 2012, and have not added one oz of R12 since.
Ya, the original compressor is big and heavy. And ya, Chevy moved the compressor from the right side to the left side (ONE OF THE DUMBEST MOVES GM EVER MADE!!!) in 69. But it still blows cold on R12.

There is a commonly available aftermarket heater core cover that replaces the evaporator housing. Works well. You need to mount the blower fan resistor in the cover and maybe drill the mounting holes, it’s been a while since my hands were on a new one.

Non invasive, 100% reversible and doesn’t look hokey or out of place.

Search “Chevelle AC delete” “they” all have them available

FWIW - I would reinstall factory AC before I went aftermarket, but that’s just me. Not debatable is that R12 cools better than any of the newer refrigerants. You could always convert to R134a for future considerations.
