I’m assuming you mean how the two parts are clocked. My recollection is that offset is “by the book.”

I offset it, I put rtv on the back of the seal, and leave the ends dry.

 

Interesting, I’ve never put RTV on the back of the seal.

I have never used any RTV on a rear main seal. And I know of one instance of someone who used too much and it caused a leak. GM never used it.

 

I thought that rear main seals were a common problem for GM. I guess the pressure on the seal ends creates a good enough seal since they’re a little longer on the ends. I installed my seal with RTV on the seal ends and it will leak some and I don’t want to do the same process and expect different results. I might have to try that.

 

Factory engineers didn't design it for rtv. If it had developed into an issue they would have put an employee on the assembly line at a point to apply what and where it was needed. Buick had to do that on the 3800 on the oil pan level sender until they could get them with sealer already on the part.

 

I offset all mine 1/4" NO SEALANT. Have yet to have one leak except when I put lower seal in backwards once. LOL It really leaked.

 

Glad I'm not the only one who has done this. Painful lesson.

 

I always offset them and used Indian Head brown non-drying shellac on the caps mating surfaces
