this is probably un-needed..... but all converters are cut open for over haul or repair. A simple process really.

A converter in a centrifical trash can. As the converter spins it throws out all of the trash and packs it up in little spots in the converter shell.

I work for a small converter/tranny company and you'd be surprised at the garbage that comes out of converters.
