The problem is that the old power steering gears (up through 1976) had 13/16 diameter input shafts. All of the later gears (1977 and later) had 3/4 dia shafts. I can't find a service GM flexible coupling that has a flange for a 13/16 diameter input shaft. I have some old GM part numbers that will work but none of them show up using GMPartsDirect. You might possibly find them as NOS on eBay or at swap meets.

I really dislike the "kits" that are offered to rebuild the Saginaw flexible coupling. Unfortunately, at this point we may be running out of alternatives.

My biggest concern is that some kits come with inadequate bolts that attach the rubber disc to the flange on the steering column. The kit supplied bolts do not have shoulders on them (or the kit does not supply bushings that act the same as a shoulder bolt). You should NEVER directly make a bolted connection through a rubber joint. You must have a metal to metal connection. Locktite, lockwashers, double nuts, or special torque prevailing nuts are not adequate either.

So if you purchase a rebuild kit that has standard bolts throw them away! Use the shoulder bolts that came with your original flex coupling regardless as to how rusty they may be.

Good luck,
