Hi All and thank you for all the great reference material here.

I have put a built 700r4 in my 72 malibu. The engine is a 1972 402 but not from this car. The intake is GM 6263753. The old quadrajet that I apparently did not examine carefully enough had no lower half to the throttle linkage. Being of unknown condition and the fact that I needed the cv cable linkage, I decided to replace it with another. I purchased an almost identical carb through SMI and it looks beautiful.

Here is the problem. It sits too low. The lower linkage sits on the intake manifold actually holding the carb up a bit. I figure thats why the lower linkage must of been cut off the old carb. The TCI throttle/cv cable bracket kind of confirms the carb is to low as it hits - won't even mount because it needs about 1/2" more height.

What am I missing? Is there supposed to be a carb spacer? Do I have the wrong carb? Am I just being dumb? Hopefully I have pictures attached below. Please Help and thank you in advance

I found a carb with linkage like yours and set it on an aluminum GM manifold and it has about a half inch clearance to manifold and the bolt. I suspect that your manifold was intended to use a carb spacer, and it was probably an insulator, too.

Please, has anyone run into this particular situation? I am stuck now. I already have the new carb and the 700r4 is already installed. What are my feasible options? Spacer? New intake?
thank you

Ed

How much higher does the carb need to be to clear everything? I can't tell from the pics, but is the intake bolt the main thing in the way?

Pull the old arm out of your old carb, pull the new arm out of the new carb... compare them. it everything other than the throttle arm is the same, swap the old into the new... just a thought.... Jeff
Yeah don't do that!!!
The screws that hold the throttle plate are staked don't screw with that.
Is your car matching numbers car?
Do you want an aluminum intake on there or do you prefer the cast iron?
If you want the original cast iron add a spaver then you are good to go.

Here;s a spacer

I googled it, one result was a really nice red one for $200. yikes.

I had an issue like this before. The difference between a manual and automatic carb is the kickdown arm. This manifold might have come from a manual transmission car.

Thanks for the update. Glad you got your problem solved.

The throttle arm for your carb was for a later model car. The intake you have is a low rise. As you discovered not the best pairing. Perhaps you could post a picture of your final solution as it might be a valuable resource for another member.

What did you use to hold your TV cable?
