Two bolts hold the shifter head to the mtg plate, one long 7/16 bolt and one long 3/8 bolt. Both attach the shifter head to the mtg. plate.

the body of the car is in the way...i can't get to those bolts..can i?....i just removed the motor mount bolts....but then i see the headers are still bolted in so the motor won't tilt back....should i be able to just unbolt those 2 bolts and then pull the shifter down?....the linkage is easy to get to

my,
Not sure how different a 66 is from my 71, but I dont remember having to remove the shifter to pull the trans, and believe me I did it a "few" times when I was racing the car fairly regularly. I used to just unbolt the handle and leave the shifter bolted to the trans.

i got it out....the problem is that the carpet was in the way of getting to the top bolt...i had to cut the carpet back a bit....i even got the tranny out without taking the cross member out....it was tough with the exhaust in the way....but i got it....thanks

That is the hard way to do it. It may be difficult to get back in.

This is how I do it. Remove the driveshaft and shove a yoke or plug into tailshaft, remove the distributer cap, remove the shifter handle and boot, unbolt pipes from headers, unbolt trans mount, unbolt crossmember, jack up engine under oil pan, remove crossmember, lower engine, unbolt and remove transmission.

EXACTLY as Philip described it above!
If you have the exhaust connected, you DO NOT need to support the rear of the engine with the tranny removed. The ex pipes will support it just fine with ZERO problems.
With that tranny cross member out of the way, it will be sooooooooooooooo much easier installing/removing the tranny!

I R/R'd the Muncie in my `67 several times and it was a piece of cake. At the time I had a (as in one) jack stand and the bumper jack. Unscrew the boot bezel on the console, jack up the driver side rear (which also raised the passenger side a bunch), place jack stand for safety, disconnect speedo cable, drop drive shaft (never worried about fluid loss as gear oil is cheap and just replaced it), unbolt crossmember (only takes a couple minutes), push up on tranny and slide crossmember out, let tranny down and unbolt it, with tranny resting on chest, slide it back until it's out, while holding tranny, lean to driver's side and slide it onto the floor, drag it out from under the car. I now have a couple floor jacks and a bunch of jack stands so it's a little easier but not any faster.

well the car used to be an automatic....so i'm not sure if the hole in the floor is a correct size....well i disconnected the whole shifter...i guess i'll have to deal with putting it all back together when i come back to it all
