Pros and cons of side exit exhaust

I have to do a complete exhaust system change this year, headers are old and have a couple holes, as well as the pipes. Anyway, I like the idea of a side exit exhaust, right in front of the rear wheels. Im thinking of going with SpinTech mufflers, only because I want to keep the mufflers in the stock location for clearance reasons, and Spin Tech makes a model that has the in and out on the same end...I can mount it in the same place, and at the exit, I can use a 90* elbow of 3", which should bring the outlet right about where I want it. The tech at SpinTech said if it wasnt the right place, he would cut the outlet in the side of the muffler so I would do exactly what I want. He said they modify them all the time. This will be 3" all the way back. I know it will be a bit loud, that's OK. But I have turn downs now, no tailpipes, and exiting straight out the side will be a lot better than what I have now. I dont want to go with tail pipes out the back. Anyone done this before, and what do you think??

3 things I can think of;
1) It will stink inside the car with the exhaust exiting there.
2) Check your area for inspection laws. Around here, the exhaust must exit behind the rear wheels,
3) It will be very loud

I had an older Jeep with side exhaust. The rear wheels would get dirtier quicker from the suit-like black stuff. Probably not an issue for a race car. ;)

But with the lifted jeep, the exhaust would point right into other car's windows. I always wanted to richin up the A/F beyond belief and watch people smirk and whine. :D good times... :)

My '59 Impala with a Stroker and flowmasters has the exhaust exiting at the rear of the wheelwells and it's "LOUD" and "SMELLY"............. My Chevelle also has Flowmasters but the exit is under the rear bumper and it sounds a lot better.

Had it on my '74 camaro. I didn't have probs with the exhaust smell, but had a angle cut tip, whch helped. noise wasn't a factor for me :), but one thing not mentioned is leg burns! Your passengers may complain of singed ankles.

Johnny,

Years ago in high school on my 66 Chevelle when I had a small block in it I worked at a meineke part time. What I did is from the headers ran 2 1/2" pipe strait back. I welded some small tabs on the transmission cross memeber and had a holes drilled and tapped and I used these to connect hangers. Just past the trans cross memeber I installed the mifflers which were center offsets. 3" past the back of the muffler I put approx a 45-50 degree bend in the pipe. It ended up exiting in front of the back wheel. On the ends I did a 45 degree angle cut with the longest part of the pipe facing up with hope of keeping exhaust away from my interior compartment. Note: this car was stock ride height, not lowered, so clearance was not a problem on my 66; on my 70 convertible if I did this I think clearance would be more clearance issues.

SO in NJ I failed inspection cause in that state exhaust must be a minumum of 18" past the last working window. Went home and pulled off the rear window cranks and when I went back I told them they were not working windows at all. I passed.

Now this was a mild small block build with stock compression, stock heads, headers, an aluminum intake and a 600 cfm carb; so its no comparison to your BB. But noise wise is was very quiet at idle up to approx 2500 rpm. after that it stated to get a little loud. Far as fumes go in that car even with all windows open it was fine. I would have expected to smell some when at a stand still with all windows open but it was fine. I think it can be done if thought out well by an exhaust guy. I dont like the 90 degree bend as I think it will encourage fumes to enter the car possibly, it wont look as good, and if flow is wht you are looking for a 90 degree bend isnt optimum. Good luck with it and let us know what you end up with.

I Pennsylvania the exhaust from a automobile must exit at the rear bumper,Pick up trucks must exit behind the cab or passanger compartment. And or as per fact.specs, For the most part the Gestapo will not bother you with a wrong type exhaust, in front of the tires or something you designed that is not approved by the state. Then do something stupid--It will be towed to a state inspection station, and yes they pick your car apart. The end result could be very ugly. I believe most cops will not bother a guy with a weekend toy car as long as you dont act like a horses Azz. I have found this to be true in my lifetime. Bob ACES 2825

Thanks so much guys for the info and replys. Let me address them sort of from the top... State inspection will not be a problem, let's just leave it at that!! Dust...yes, Im sure there will be some, but remember, I have turn downs now....when I pull into a parking lot for a show or cruize-in, if there is any dust or dirt, I can make quite a few people unhappy fast!!! So side exits that face more out than down will be a big improvement. I get some exhaust in the car now...you cant really smell it as you're driving, but when I get out of the car, I can smell it on my clothes. Again, I can see that improving. Loud just isnt a problem!! Never is, never was!! Im a car audio nut, and I attend a lot of concerts, so my hearing is probably shot anyhow.....What?? What?? OK, I think that about covers it so far. I can say that I havn't seen anything yet to change my mind. I just hope I like the sound of the SpinTech's. Thanks again. John

To be honest, i never really liked the look of side exit exhausts on A-bodies. Perhaps if u had a custom "flat" tubing, where it has the same diameter as the 3" pipe. But even then, thats pretty race car like, might be overkill for a street/strip ride.

Greg, that setup couldnt be much simpler, huh? I remember seeing you car in here before, about a year or more ago. I wish I could do it that simple, but the ground clearance would be a big problem for me. Great car though, love it!!

Lets see, don't drive when it's cold cause ya have to have the window down to stay alive. It stinks, you'll stink when ya get out. Cops don't much appreciate it when sitting next to ya at a light. Every Ricer with more than 40 HP will try ya. Every pickup truck with Flows will try ya. It scares the hell out of the lady getting into or out of her vehicle next to ya when ya fire it up. It makes babies cry and dogs run. It leaves soot patches on any new car parked next to it when it's cold. Umm, did I miss anything?

I dont like the idea of stainless tips, they look very bulky and stand out like a sore thumb. Having it as normal tubing (painted black/dark looks best usually) it looks much more packaged and becomes a subtle detail when lookin at the whole car.

I have it on my elky, drop me a email and I will send you the pic. I dont have it on the internet and it wont let me paste it in the message box. Its awesome, you should do it for sure.

So Charlie, I guess you dont like the idea??? Thanks, I asked for all input, so even though none of those will deter me, I appreciate the comments. Besides, I love scaring old ladies and kids, that happens now most every time I start it up. Keeps people on their toes! And the soot spot will be a welcome change compared to the layer of dust and leaves that I blow on cars now. I'll still be able to set off car alarms, right?? 72Chevy, that's funny...I've had that happen before. SS454, I agree and was thinking the same thing...I think I'll go stealth with it, no chrome or stainless. Brett, I will send you email now, and I will appreciate the pictures, thanks!! Oh, I got an email from SpinTech on the custom muffs with the side outlets, that looks like an option also. I'll have to see which ones fit the application better. Thanks again for the input. John

I had exhaust like that when I was young and broke.
Got a "get tail pipes and get it inspected or ticket" ticket from a local law inforcement officer.

Ironically, that same cop about ten years later was busted for stealing drugs from the evidense room, and sells cars now.

If its a race car, or tail pipes don't fit, you've got to do what you can, but on a street car, it really seems pretty "trailer parkish".

Side pipes might be neat because that would be retro cool, but otherwise I think people will assume you couldn't afford tail pipes, or that you're a *******.
