When you drop in a distributor, you can have No.1 fire where ever you want to start it at. Just have to follow that with the rest of the firing order. So if you would like to have No.1 in the back of the cap, mark that one and go 8-4-3-6-5-7-2 done deal. I did that on one of my cars in the late 70's, drove people nutz when they looked at that.
I mean, sure it works, but if you do it "factory-style" with #1 being around 5-6 o'clock, you only end up with 2 wires on the 'wrong' side of the cap from side of the engine (#2, #3).

You put #1 facing the firewall, you're gonna have 8 and 4 on the driver's side of the distributor, then 3, then 6 also on the wrong side, and repeat for all the odd numbered wires being over on the passenger side. It'll run fine, but looks like shit.
