One last check before a yard drive was to dump the differential fluid and check things out. Surprise…never good to find heavy metal in the lube.

it looks like the center pin has some distress. The gear damage contained to pinion gear. The metal looks like remnants of a pinion oil seal.

What do you see? Can I clean it well and run it ?

Looks like that whole carrier is beat to snot. Pin hole is oblong. Even replacing the pin it wont help and end up in the same condition.

Looks like the center pin retaining pin came loose some time in the past and allowed the pin to bounce against the pinion gear.

Looks like it is time for either a posi center section for the 10 bolt or a 64-67 12 bolt rear end upgrade.

I'm thinking it was running up until the point of you pulling the cover? As long as your not depending on it to get you across country I'd clean it out, fill it with fresh fluid, and see what it gets you. If you don't care about it, roll on. Yes it's not perfect, but it's still in operating condition.

Yup, that’s the plan for the short term. In the meantime

I will look for parts for repair or upgrade. Most of the swap meets are done in North Dakota already. Craigslist and facebook nearby have nothing as yet.

Till then its local cruising for the Rust Bucket 65 Chevelle. I am looking forward to it’s maiden voyage.

Scroll down to post #93 to see what kind of fun you can have cleaning these out. 😅

Wow that was an ordeal for sure, two cans of brake cleaner and some scrubbing and its back together. Will put a 100 or so miles on it and dump the fluid again. I could see some reflections in the fluid as I let it over flow some.

Found this on local for sale add for $150, would this be a good solution for the damaged center section? View attachment 833257

you would need a good carier for that open one to put that into and you have to make sure if fits your axles spline count. They are decent for offeroad type vehicles but not the best for a long term solution for your issue.

Jebchevelle, thanks for the input, I will keep looking. A couple more pics from the add.

Should be yard driving next week. Will be awhile before it’s ready for highway speeds. So I have some time to search for either 12 bolt rear end or 10 bolt repair parts.
