Just curious if anyone has any results in e.t. difference going to powershifting!! Current best is 11.64 at 115.5 mph with 1.54 60 foot grannyshifting a 9.8 to 1 327 richmond 5 speed 66 nova street strip car.Leaving 5500,shifting 7000, and traps at 7200 in 4th gear with 4.10 gear. Thanks much for any info or feedback, AL

Man, 11.60s with a 327, that's sweet!!!! I know the car is light to begin with, but, what else is done to the motor? What are the specs? I've got a 9.5:1 388 but have been told that I'm capable of running high 12s if tuned right. I know my car is a lot heavier then yours, but damn, your car sure sounds quick!!!

Excellent times, excellent short time. Very few folks here race with a stick, so wait for experience to chime in. Bill Burke's friend, Mr 68 ( used to).

Bob, his short time is as good as yours and he has to WORK IT! ;)

My only addition would be , if you can run those times without "boardshifting" , forget about it. In a heavier Chevelle, it tends to , lets see, twist yokes, mangle clutches, and I don't even race the car! It may be marginal or no ET improvement with a ton more stress on the metal.`

Define granny shifting, I seen guys rowing the gears that sure looked like granny shifting, but I know they were trying their best. HAHAA

One friend had his muncie set up right and left his foot to the floor on the bottle.

Powershifting will be more lilkely to break stuff, but if it don't break with a 5500 rpm, 1.5x 60', I'd say your drivetrain is pretty stout! ;)

What bell / clutch set-up and headers are you using? I am gathering stuff to go with a manual in my 65 deuce.

I granny shift just to protect my $2,300 dollar investment in my richmond 5 speed!! Now have you lost a rear end yet launching at 5,500?? I lost one from a 3,500 RPM launch. What tires are you running? Are you dead hooking?Whats your 60' time look like? That ET is impressive with your MPH in a 327 stick car!!!

Thanks guys! Did twist 12 bolt center up which was a domino effect bending driveshaft then breaking mainshaft in new 5 speed on 1st pass 3 years ago and this was after the welder did not want to weld tubes to center because he felt it was not needed!!!! Always go with your gut feeling and get tubes welded and don't get persuaded! As far as the combo i think i just lucked out with a good bunch of parts that work good with each other! Heads are old twisted wedge at 185 cc volume that were ported on intake side only! Cam is U.D. flat solid lifter 243 at .050" and 106 lsa! Headers are fenderwell hooker supercomp. Clutch is the ram rag 309 with diaphram plate! Tire is 27 x 10.5 hoosier QTP which is about all i can fit in stock wheelwell! Bars are caltracs which i am still flabbergasted over!I GUESS this stuff is just a never ending deal and you always want more! Like to get to 11.49 goal and say i am happy there since i don't really want a cage{rule N.H.RA.} BUT WHO the heck knows! I know 383 malibu ran a richmond in his old combo so maybe he will chime in with results. Thanks again! AL

Al - Regardless of whether it is luck or good management, I'd say you have a real good working combo! Based on your speed and et, I think you're being modest in regards to your "granny" shifting.

I can't give you any data on granny shifting versus power shifting the Richmond, but I can tell you that we picked up .15 seconds going from an H pattern to a V-gate shifter on our Richmond, at about the same performance levels that you are running. BTW, at 7000 rpm, you're getting close to the limits of power shifting a Richmond. At 7200 rpm we finally gave up and had ours pro-shifted, which was good for our peace of mind and also another .10 seconds or so.

It began increasingly more demanding to drive on the street with both the V-gate and the pro-shifting modifications. It boils down to "How much are you willing to put up with?".

BTW, Mike was right on regarding breakage. By the time we were running mid-10s, the Richmond couldn't take the abuse. After breaking it twice in 6 weeks we swapped it out for a clutchless Liberty (which is definitely not streetable, but we never looked back and have no regrets).
