I had Flowmaster 40 series on my 9:1 BB, with a 2.5" dual with H, dumping downward at the bumper. It just wasn't impressive enough sound level (loudness), I actually put washers under my triangle caps to let a little sound out there.

I switched to Pypes Violators based on their web hype. They sound cool at idle and are loud enough in general, but at more open throttle, I think they sound raspy or ratty. It's a high frequency popping, not like a big block rumble at all.

I am not concerned about ultimate horsepower, I just want something loud and deep sounding without the pop. What about the FM Super 44s? Are they significantly louder than 40's? Any other ideas?

Yup, they were 40's. I had 50's on first, in fact. They were way too quiet!

And yup, it's kind of a ricey, crackly exhaust note. Dang it, now I am going to think of that every time.

The Violator muffs for my application are offset in, middle out. I could see right through them, there was just a perforated angled tube inside.

Dynomax has a safe and sound guarantee if you don't like the sound

Loud and deep? Then I suggest Spintech Pro Streets (small case) dumped at the axle. They should be just what you want.

A friend runs them on his 10.3:1 406 SBC dumped at the axle and they sound absolutely NASTY. Way too loud for my tastes but perfect for him-- case in point, he bought a cam 2 sizes bigger than Mike Lewis and I both recommended just for a nastier idle pulling into car shows...

Also, if you want deeper tone then ditch the crossover. An X pipe (and an H to a lesser extent) both smooth and quiet the exhaust note.

I used to run the 14" Dynomax Ultraflos that some of the other guys are recommending and they are nowhere near as loud or nasty as the small cased Spintechs. Flowmaster 1-chambers are also really loud.
