Went down to the cruise-in at the local Burger King with my boy and my Dad on Saturday. There was a local antique car show just wrapping up near by so there weren't many cars there yet when I pulled in as they were still coming in. So, who comes up and parks next to me but this guy...

Pretty sweet. Can't remember the last time I saw one of those on the road around here. Man, I felt small and inadequate parked next to that! BUT, then again, he can't hold a candle to my hood ornament...

It was a pretty cool day.

Must be the BK in Manassas, 'eh Brandon? I've seen that yellow Bird there before. Very nice indeed. Some very nice cars hit that spot.

I don't go very often Brandon - in fact I haven't been there yet this season and only managed maybe two trips there last year. It's not very far for me - I'm just in Fairfax, but, well, dreaded responsibilities seem to get in the way.

If you ever happen to run across a very large, very black, '66 Impala convertible it means I'm loitering about somewhere!

Regards,

Dan

Each car is in it's own class, IMHO. I see nice stuff, rare stuff, and stuff with so much rust, you wonder what's holding it together. Yet every person out there has enough pride to drive it out there, park it, and open the hood. Nice cars, and your boy looks like he can't wait to get them keys from you in a few years. ;)

Completely agree Darren! The 67 is every bit as cool in my eyes. :)

Back in the late 70's, early 80's, there would be a gathering of hot rods at the neighborhood Jack in the Box. I grew up on the extreme west edge of Vegas, a block and a half from the JitB, which was at the last stoplight in town at the time (and until the nineties, within a mile of the last light). The occasional challenge would result in a race up Charleston Blvd, towards Red Rock Canyon. For the most part, a cop would have to pass by JitB to be in a position to enforce any laws. Charleston made a loop back to the extreme south end of the valley, which was undeveloped back then. So, you could run all the way around if necessary and it would be a 25 mile trip from any patroled area to intersect your escape route.

Word spread, and at it's zenith, cars would be parked for half a mile in every direction, including Pro Streeters that had been trailered in. In 1980 or '81, both Hot Rod and Car Craft showed up on a random Friday night. I was a sophmore, maybe a junior, in high school and on a double date for the Sadie Hopkin's dance. The turn out that night was huge. I couldn't pass it up, parked nearly as far away as my mom's house was, but in a different direction and made my way through the crowd. We were hours late for the dance.

The magazine folks picked about 10 stand out cars (one of which was one of my best friends turbocharged '79 Z28) for photo op's that night on Fremont Street and again the next morning up at Red Rock. You gotta remember that Vegas was pretty small back then. The whole county had less than 100K residents, so this was huge at the time.

My '66 was pretty much stock with American slots back then, but my "2ROWDY" license plates were included in a collage of pic's, mostly plates. I thought that was the poop, still have the mag stashed somewhere.

That's a good one  And, yeah, me too! Unfortunately none of them were mine though!

High school in the early '80's in Central PA was nothing but Chevy muscle. OK, so it was mostly Camaros, but there were also some awesome 68-72 Chevelles and a few Novas.

Funny... only ONE Mustang worth mentioning in the whole parking lot surrounded by a dozen or so Chevy's of the same era, and I don't think ANY Mopars.

I don't even have a picture of the 4-dr '67 Impala I had at the time... and that's probably OK too :D

Outclassed? Yeah, probably
NOT!!!!!:noway:
the bird is damaged on the left front::sad: hood, fender, nose not alligned correctly, damaged to front nose at left front finder on the side in the middle.
driver has some kind of ego problem he had to stick out farther than others parked near by. egos :(

that is a great looking car you have!
and that a good looking seat duster you got also!

Outclassed? Only in the mind of the superbird owner. That thing is so ass ugly you couldn't pay me enough to drive it around. I would much rather have your wheels.
Unfortunately, most car people confuse monetary value with actual value.

Thanks guys, I would rather have mine too!

The Superbird has always been an "exotic" to me ever since I got a glimpse of a real one back when I was a boy in the 70's, so I'm still awestruck by its presence I guess. Still has a mystique that never went away.

I don't really think the guy was ego happy, atleast not overly. After all it's probably hard to park that thing! The car actually is very nice. What looks like damage and misalignment at the front end is the hood pin is dangling there at the seam of the fender so the hood is popped. Someone asked him while he was undoing the pins to please not open the hood yet so he could get a picture, so that's when I took mine :)

All I see is a Chevelle.

Like the little old lady at one BJ Auction told the commentator, "These were so ugly, my husband couldn't give them away. So, he put this one in the back of the building and that's where it sat for 25 years." Her husband owned a dealership up until his death. I guess it was a few years back that he passed, well anyway. Apparently, the lure of money caused this little old lady to bring her SB to the auction and get rid of it. ;)

Same here Brandon, they always had a mystique for me too. I grew up in Arlington, close to Falls Church, and there was a Mopar dealer within easy peddling distance from my house. As a young boy those cars were magical, carrying the same mystique as "396".
But out classed? Nahhh, your '67 is schweet.

Nah, your car wasn't outclassed; looks good to me. Like 1BLACKHARLEY said, I'd sell the 'bird and use the cash to buy a Chevelle; like say a 66/67 L78, or maybe a '70 LS6. Or both, if I got enough dough for it. :D
A '66 L79 Nova'd go down pretty easy, too.

Outclassed? Only if you are a Mopar fan. I do appreciate the SuperBirds for what they were. I like them. As far as were you outclassed by it, nah. Each and every car that shows up at a show has a fan for it. Some like Chevy's, others like Mopars, and (gasp) yet others like Fords. The non-Chevy fans may think you were outclassed, and others still will feel you showed up the Mopar. Don't sweat it either way, carshows are all about being there for the fun. If you start worrying about what pulls in next to you at shows, the fun will be gone.

By the way, you have a very nice chevelle there, and your son looks like he enjoys going to shows with you:thumbsup:

Then you have got the ones like me that like all of them. :D

I don't know how blasphemous that is. A person on a Chevelle web site liking a Ford. But there is one now. :D :p

Hey Brandon, do they have that cruise all the time? My sister lives in Gainesville so I'm up there quite a bit and will try to find it next time I'm up.

#25 ·
Well I wouldn't mind taking the Superbird out for a spin but I would have to agree that it is a little on the homely side and I actually like the looks of many Mopars. About the only Mopar muscle that bird looks better than is a pre 67 Barracuda.

There was a local dealer, here,Doug Griffith Chrysler Plymouth in Carney,Md,had those in his showroom in the 70's,couldn't give'm away. They would not pass Md's inspection because of the front bumpers. Now they're worth a bundle,go figure.

Brandon,
Outclassed…I don’t think so, all the cars are nice and reflect the efforts of the owners. However as you stated, you spent the afternoon with your dad and son at a car show in your Chevelle. Long after the Chevelle is gone; your son will remember the day he went to the car show with his dad and grandpa. Now that’s class and class with style. Save that photo!

That is a great link. I've been going to shows in the DC area for about 12 years so I knew about most of those. Maybe next year I'll cruise out and meet up with you guys!
