Brett welcome to the 66 club (the best looking Chevelle GM ever made :D). Man I wish I had your problem , lets see BB or SB, Hmmm. In my opinion if you really think you want the 66 as your daily driver then go with a SBC . But if you plan on it seeing some track time the BB would be the better choice ( there is no substitute for cubic inches). The best solution to your dilemma would be to build a big inch LS motor lets say 427 cubic inches with fuel injection. With the weight savings you would have and the tuning capabilities with a lap top . You could strike fear in the hearts of these big block lovers :D . But still be able to get 20 mpg with a overdrive transmission.

build your own to match this, you could do it for a fraction of the cost with Doc's help

Brett If you really want to do a ls motor then you have to start with this http://www.sdpc2000.com/product/19166454/LSXBlockBowtieBare.aspx . The engineering that went into this block is incredible. you could easily make a 454 out of it. Version of this have been used in endurance racing now for several years, Its bullet proof and better structurally than a BB . Worth the $. If I had to redo my setup this is the way I would go or maybe a http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/lsg...iigenivperformance/crateengines/SDPC440ciLS7ElToroGrandeShortBlockAssembly.aspx :D.

You are suppose to be a engineer Brett do the research yourself and tell me what you find out. But if you really want to use 50 year old tech, then I have a running 283 sitting on a engine stand looking for a home.

Brett I did not mean to sound overbearing in the statements I made. But I have been following the development and use of the LS series block for awhile and have become a fan. They are pricey and you could build a lot for a lot less using a GEN I/II block. I just would like to see some one in our group do a build on one of these to see what it can really do in the real world .

Brett I think with a little junk-yarding, some machine work (I think you know someone who would help) and buying the right parts you could build a carbureted LS that you would be pleased with.

My call then would be to stay local with finding a complete setup. That way if you have issues, it should be easier for you to resolve. Do you not have a favorite wrecking yard they can do a search for you. the 5.3L out of a wrecked truck would be a great start for a "DRIVER".

Yeah I remember that build . I was a little puzzled though that the builder had to use such a nice unmolested 66. That was a Oregon car that was in pristine condition . It just seemed he could have started with a nice hot rod 66 instead.

You know Brett that is a great idea. Just change out the solid roller cam setup and put a EFI system on that and it would be almost bullet proof . Put a six speed behind it an the fuel economy would be excellent.

PS I ran a well built 283 for years they are hard to kill!

Nice Dave :D, but true. (I can't believe I am going to say this) I am sure you know size does matter.

TOG

PS Just to let you know mine made about 290HP at the flywheel and actually could spin my 265/50/15's pretty good:yes:.

That was fun Brett. I love doing tear downs . So how much air did you have to put into the Elky's air bags to keep it from dragging? I love the picture of George standing there "supervising" the tear down (Notice in the back ground the TWO people working :D). I do believe that you and Paul made out well, the price for all those parts was great:thumbsup:. The project 67 Elky Drag car will be fun to watch come together.

Brett that looks great . I have been trying to find a web site that sells restoration kits for steering wheels. I remember stumbling across one a couple of months back, they had a paint specially made for steering wheels. I will keep looking.

Edit: It was Eastwood that carries kits for steering wheel restoration. Check out there web site Brett If that paint does not hold up.
