Nitrous how much will it help?

I bought a nos powershot system for my car so it's 125shot. Just wonderinghow much it should help only running the 1/8th. Best time so far was a 7.9 at 87.8. Not to worried about the engine I have a 502ho with edelbrock cam victor jr heads and intake. Holley 850dp. Tci super street fighter turbo400 with a tci 2900 stall nos anti ballon converter. Aeromotive electric fuel pump so I think everything should be safe. Should I back the timing off a few degrees? Should it be good with pump gas? How much should it knock of my time?

The rule is 2* retard for each 50 hp increase. Lets assume your typical timing is 37* total and you want to use 150hp in nitrous. You would retard your timing 6* in that case. There are several schools of thought on fuel/nitrous ratio by the various manufacturers. The most critical factor of all is excessive timing. Start small and pay attention to each area of interest i.e., timing, fuel pressure and nitrous jet size. I chose a quite small nitrous system, NOS top Shot and played with it conservatively until I surpassed my intended goal. With a 90 hp hit my junk ran a 10.11 @ just under 133 mph. You could drive this car wherever you chose assuming you can afford lots of gas.
Good luck

The Powershot is non-adjustable. It will work fine if you plan on just teeing off the fuel line right to the solenoid, but will be very rich. If you wanted to optimize the tune a little bit, you could use a seperate regulator and flow the fuel pressure to a lower setting. This is how bigger systems are setup. I cut my teeth on a Powershot back in the day, it worked ok. My car picked up 3-4 tenths in the 1/4. I eventually upgraded the plate to an adjustable unit, and then bigger solenoids. As far as timing, the 2 per 50 rule is a good starting point, some say the first 50 is free so to speak. The plugs will tell the story, but you may find that it won't require much timing out at that level. If using pump gas, definitely pull a few. Don't use extended reach plugs, use a NGK 5671A-9 to be safe. Get a bottle heater and a gauge, the pressure is key. Any lower than 900psi and it becomes really rich. Weigh the bottle after a few runs, when it loses 5 or 6 pounds, you won't be able to get the pressure up, and will have to get it topped off or run into the rich condition again. The stuff is addicting! Cheapest bang for the buck out there. Have fun!

Either hook up a full throttle switch or a button and nail it on the launch. Use a regulator on the fuel side so you have some sort of tuning ability. Overly rich is worse than going lean. Friend of mine was running 11.80's and got a 10.99 with a 125 powershot kit, till he popped the engine lol.

My son wants to put a 125 kit on his stock '94 Camaro, but I mentioned that this would happen. He then said that we could then put a 383 or LS in it! This horsepower illness just keeps getting worse doesn't it?!?!? hahahaha

Would be nice to get that OptiSpark out of there though!

As long as the tune is right and you curb detonation, mechanically it will take it. The ring gaps would be the only thing I would be concerned about. They're setup fairly tight from GM for longevity, and you need some extra room so they don't butt with the added cylinder pressure. When you said it came with a fogger, I assume you meant a purge?

Last time I used my kit with 100 pills I picked up 9mph in the 1/4. ET wasn't a huge improvement from clutch slippage but it was night and day on how she pulled.

I'd pull 4 degrees and check the plugs after the first pass. Make a test hit half track, if it runs clean and plugs look good - next pass run it out the back door.

125 pills on a BB is a tickle. You'll be looking for 250 in no time!

Last time i Sprayed my Impala it picked up 0.6 sec in the 1/8 from 7.23 to 6.62 and 14mp/h but i also spray it with a Pro shot fogger

I knocked off about 6/10's in the 1/4 with a 125 shot in a 10 sec. small block.
On a real mild 350 a 200 shot went from 7.60 to 6.60 in the 1/8. That was a cast, junk short block with a lot of timing pulled out.
In my good engine I run 36° with or without the bottle. Never hurt anything with the old Nitrous Works system I've had since 1999.

Well it's all hooked up and ready to go. Ran a separate line off my regulator for the fuel to the nitrous kit. It runs 6-7psi. Haven't pulled any timing yet think I'm just going to pull 4 degrees. Switched my line lock to a rubber bad switch on the shifter and using the push button on my shifter to spray it. It's the hurst pistol grip shifter

Invest in a window switch and ditch the button control crap this isn't fast and the furious. Pressure cutoff switch, everything can be controlled electronically. Colder plugs may also be needed. I'd read more about nitrous though you seem really new. Nitrous is awesome to use but be prepared to smoke trannys and rear ends.

I'm just going to run a baby shot 100Hp good for a second in the 1/4 and 5-6 tenths in the 8th.

Button control crap? Fast and Furious? People have been using a button decades before that stupid series of movies came along. I'm also a believer in the K.I.S.S. method, no extra window switches, fuel pressure switches, they cause more problems.

71chevelle, congrats on your track night :)

Back in the early 90s when I was still in HS/college, I bought a used Powershot kit. My 400 small-block was running 13.70s @ 103-104 and became 12.60-12.70s @ 110-111 on spray. I didn't know squat about it other than to only activate it at WOT and above 2500 or 3000 RPM. Everything I knew came from an article in Hot Rod. I didn't use it a ton, and I never blew the motor -- but I did ruin an already-slushy TH350 with the extra power. I loved it, it was a hoot to roll along at in 1st gear, hit the button, and do a rolling burnout. But a bottle didn't last very long either.

I still have the entire setup, has been in the basement since at least 1999-2000, but I did get my tank re-certified (the old, tall 10lb bottle) and tested my solenoids recently. Everything still works.. :)

Make sure you have a decent tune-up on the car before you install it. It's fun to play with. I'll bet it would be awesome on a 502!

I sprayed it a few times made four passes first pass did it about half track in second gear. Checked the plugs and looked good. Best pass I ran a 7.45 at 95.7mph with a 1.72 60ft. Think I still got more in the car need to get the launch ether and my 60ft down

No serious nitrous cars have fuel pressure window switches, none....leave it off. They cause nothing but problems.

Both of the race cars Hopkins, run were built specifically for Nitrous. I have no idea what the white one will run without it. But, they regularly spray 300 hp. on that 383 mouse.
We knock 9 or 10 degrees timing out for the Nitrous. Two weeks ago, it picked up a little over .2 and dropped 2 mph. just by ramping in the Nitrous. Was going 6.18 at 121 or there about a few weeks back, spraying it on the hit. The car went a 5.91 at 119 mph. last weekend at Crossville and a 5.92 at 118 at Knoxville last night.

We always flow the Nitrous before we race, each time. Keeps the engine from melting itself. Not doing regular maintenance on any car is asking for trouble. Purging the Nitrous, right before you race, is worth a little power too.
