Has nothing to do with WordPerfect. Gates would never do anything to appease WordPerfect people. If he did, he'd make MS Word friendlier to use, especially when formatting a document. Word is fine for taking notes (hence a ~word~ processor) but WordPerfect is much better for creating read documents (hence a ~document~ processor). IMO, Word is one step up from Notepad.

But, as Bob said they are simply formatting codes such as ~Paragraph~ (the funny, backwards P) whenever you press <Enter>; a right arrow showing ~Tab~; a dot showing ~Spacebar~; etc. They also help someone who doesn't know to understand why there are 30 spaces between words and 6 blank lines between sentences.
