Had this posted in the Restoration Corner. Only had one reply, which was just a idea for a patch job. So I thought I would try here.

Been looking at some NEW replacement steering columns.
This would give me a floor shift column (no shift lever) plus upgrade the 40 year old parts. But I have a few questions about this upgrade.

1). What length would I order? It's a 1969 Chevelle Malibu c/w power steering.
2). Looking at some replacements and it looks like I have to use a remote key switch for the ignition?
3). Some replacements use a after market steering wheel only?

These are the ones I have been looking at.

Sure could use some help from some one that has done this before.
Not to worried about factory correct.
Using a B&M Quick Silver floor shift (auto).
Thank you in advance.

Also the problem with those kits is you need the "additional" items to make it work. So, $600 + another $150 for the install kit

You have choosen 1969-72 with a Power Box 13/16" 36 and Original Wiring.
This Installation Kit Includes: U-Joint, Collapsible Shaft and Rag Joint. (Installation Kits are sold separately) ididit Steering Column Installation Kits

Monday $159.95

That's a joke when places do this, I hate it when these people nickel and dime us to death. Serious though, $160 for coupler and shaft? Think I'm feeling the "shaft" on this one.

Another thing to consider, is whether those aftermarket columns are "collapsible" or not for crash-safety. Last thing you want in a crash is a pointy metal shaft aimed at your face moving toward you.

The best option IMHO is to look for a used one out of a 70-78 Camaro/Firebird (79+ are different). They were ALL floor shift, easy to find with tilt, and 5 minutes with a grinder make it a direct bolt-in. You will have to swap the blinker switch/harness though, which can be slipped through the column without disassembling it. :)

What is required to be ground off? This sounds like a good solution, except the local yards prob want $200 for a tilt.

The plate where the column mounts to the firewall on a Camaro is spot-welded on... grind off those 3 spotwelds, and bolt-on the plate from the Chevelle column. :)
