Hello, I just recently purchased a 1966 Chevelle and just noticed that when I open the hood there was an impression up in the "hood insulation" from the air cleaner which is a junk aftermarket wire mesh screen type of air cleaner and was wondering what I can do to resolve this issue. I can't imagine that the car is getting the proper air with it being smushed into the insulation. I asked Mike Crown and showed him a picture of the intake which he says "does not look to be to tall to cause a problem",but there is no way I can install a stock type round air cleaner due to a clearance issue. The intake is a Torker (I or II) which also has a spacer plate under the carb (which is a Holley 850) Can I remove this plate without making the motor run like crap? I hate to start removing engine parts off the motor if I don't have to. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What's the clearance problem that won't allow you to use a regular drop base air cleaner?

Remove the spacer if the drop base air cleaner and shorter filter still don't clear enough. I doubt the spacer will make much difference in how it runs.

we think we've got in pretty much figured outtonight as a matterf fact. Look at the pic of my motor and you'll see some type of aluminum ploished knobs that took the place of the bolts that went into the carb. If we remove those large knobs and replace with basic Holley screws and cut the throttle linkage it looks like a standard 14" drop base will fit. I plan on trying to make it fir tomorrow. Now just need to get a decent looking drop base air cleaner. Kinda like the S/B brand at Jeg's. Will post after we get it on. thanks

Yes, I think if you get rid of those funky bowl nuts, that will be step one. Step 2 will be to look at the spacer plate. Is it there to give a place for a vacuum port, or is it there so the rear bowl will clear something on the manifold? If it's just there as a perfomance adder, I would get rid of it. It's not doing anything for around town street driving. After that, I think a basic 14X3 drop base air cleaner will work just fine.

Thanks Ray, thats the project for the weekend. Will post pics after the job has been completed......A friend of mine has a 14" drop base air cleaner that I'm going to use to test fit the area before buying one cause they can get pretty expensive
