I hope this is posted in the correct area.
My car is a California built 71 and was sold new in Washington where it stayed until I bought it. It is a factory Malibu 400 BB with original drivetrain. The motor was built on Aug-3-70. The second owner said he changed the intake and carb but let them go with the car. The guy I got it from said he got rid of them. I know the intake should be a 3955287 but I am not sure what carb it should have. Some say a 7041200 and some say 7041220 or 7041500. I could use some help on this. Thanks for any info.

My Rochester carb book shows 7041200 for 402/454 with auto, 7041201 for 402/454 with manual trans. No difference - California or not. Colvin's Chevrolet By the Numbers shows the same thing. Same carb numbers were used on Chevelle, Monte, Camaro and full size cars.

Dyno jonn Thank you for the help. Sorry I guess I should said it is an auto. What date would JO be?

The JO is not a date code. The date code is the four numbers near the JO. The first three numbers are day of the year, the forth number is the year. 0011 would be January 1st, 0021 - January 2nd and so on. The fourth digit (1) could stand for 1971. In your case the last number should be 0 or 1. 0 if the carb was built in late 1970 or 1 if it was built in 1971. The JO stamp is for assembly line identification so the installer doesn't have to read the whole # to get the right carb on the right engine. I believe there were also color coded stickers on the carbs with the JO code on them too. Another thing that was done on the engine assembly line was spark plug installation. The spark plugs came in a big tray and tops of the plugs had a paint dab on them so the assembly line workers wouldn't have to check the #, just match the right color to the right engine. Thats just a little "tip" for Corvette restorers. To most everyone else that doesn't matter. ;)

That is what was odd about this carb. It has no other numbers. The two other codes are FA

Ok, maybe you have a Carter built Q-jet. Look on the side and see. They date their carbs differently. The J0 could be September 1970 and the FA could be the identifier for installation on the engine.
