A51 .is the Sport Option .so is badged Malibu SS .........On the tag where you saw A 51 M20 there should be another alpha numeric digit ...L30 or L34 etc this would define the engine ...........what color is the rear cove on the car

The best way is to contact GM Canada with the vin and pay for documentation but as I said if the cowl tag says A51 it has the sport option and should be badged Malibu SS but odd there is not a third alpha numeric code .post a pic .what is the rear cove color or does it have a brushed alum panel

The car has fine trim around tail lights and fine trim around cove with maybe a candian malibu emblems in middle.
I think the holes in the grill are for the same as rear cove but smaller.
quaters have malibu ss emblems.
I have had alot of cars but nothing this old or had to restore myself.
this car came on line last night and I jumped all over it and looking forward on restoring it. I would like to say thanks for the help...

Ok so I had GM Canada do a vintage request and I am puzzled , the info came back really good but the tag on firewall is not correct so what do I do from here on. do they make remakes of the fisher tag?

Car came back as 1966 chevrolet Malibu SS

Paint L- Tropic Turquoise Metallic
Engine - 396 cid 360 hp 4bbl

You'd have to check with the Canadian equivalent of the U.S. state Highway Patrol or DMV about the legality of swapping the trim tag. Oklahoma is the only state in the U.S. that I'm aware of where swapping or altering a trim tag is illegal.

That said, the most popular reproductions of trim tags that I know of come from http://trimtags.com and they cost about $225 the last I read and $12 for the rivets. Don't know if they make Canadian tags or not but you could ask.

Problems are (1) you don't know all the correct information to have stamped like body date and body number and there's no way to get that information verified that I know of and (2) a reproduction trim tag is fairly easy to spot. Since you have GM of Canada docs on the car that shouldn't be too much of a problem for any future potential buyers but I'd disclose the trim tag is a reproduction (back to original colors and options) but date and body number may not be correct. If the current trim tag looks original to the car, I'd be worried about the VIN plate - maybe a Malibu SS VIN plate was swapped to your car.

Yes I agree....
.......assume you rechecked the vin to car on GM doc ........ do you actually have the car or just looking to purchase ...... if you have it you could check the build date on the M20 and or the 12 bolt plus the vin on the frame that could help identify whats going on

My bad .should have said partial vin ......the frame date is easily visible and both are stamped on cdn cars .....the frame date may help you ......the trans will have a date code

No cdn car had the partial vin on engine pad til 68 ...... is the 12 bolt still in car ? and does it have a brace from lower to upper arm location point ?

This is what I found last weekend. The floors and trunk floor are all original and lcan't believe this for a Candian car. I got most of the parts. but can use more...lol

I'm not surprised especially for a car that pbly has been off the road for a while ..it appears the trunk has been patched right at the body mounts .......they do rust there for sure if the quarters are solid then that would be a definite plus

Yes pic of the cowl and vin tag ........ I would say it was a small block console car and the vin has been changed or you gave GM incorrect info or they made an error ..........
hard to beleive that it was ever anything but a red car ....... ?? but you said the cowl tag on that body says M20 right ??let us know where the speedo cable comes thru the firewall pass side or driver side not manual trans pedals in it now...... what rear end 10 or 12 bolt and does it have the lower control arm brace ?/ .......steering column is missing so cant see what kind of rag joint it had ............the other thing that is odd or the pic is decieving .....the front crossmember looks odd for a 66 BB chevelle anyone else think that .typical I would have thought it would have the open tow hook

Take a pic of the pass side front frame looking from the diver side hopefully the brake line still there

FYI .look after that malibu emblem on the rear cove not repo'd that I aware of
