Just want to make the car run as good as it can.
I have vacuum advance hooked up to manifold vacuum.
Engine is a 74' 400sb and I am running a points dist still. With delco 45 spark plugs and spark plug wires off of a 396.
With advance hooked up:
At idle, i have about 33 degrees of advance at 900rpm.
In gear the car idles at 600rpm and I have exactly 30 degrees of advance. Do you guys think this is too much?
Initial timing with advance disconnected and plugged I get a reading of about 15 degrees in park. That's again at 900rpm about.
My question is what rpm should I set initial? My timing light starts to not work the higher RPM i go so I cannot really get an effective mechanical advance. If someone could just be very thorough and go through the procedures that would help me out a lot.
Here are pictures of the carb and where dist is hooked up,

Another problem I am having is starting the car hot, when it is cold i give it one pump and it turns right over, but when warm if i give it one pump it will start for a second then take a while to turn over. similar symptoms as if it was flooded. i am not sure if the hot start issue is a timing issue or if it is because i do not have the choke coil spring? Any help is appreciated, if you need any more details I left out feel free to ask.
