I have a (new-to-me) '68 Chevelle. I am swapping from a crusty 350 to a 383 Stroker. I am doing the work myself. I have the 350 ready to pull out (using a hoist and a leveler). The transmission is a Muncie 4 speed that I am going to re-use (its in verified great shape).
I think I want to undo the tranny from the bell housing and leave the tranny in place while I remove the engine. Install the clutch/bellhousnig on the new 383 and drop it back in.
Bad idea? I know some people say its easier to take everything out, but that is giving me anxiety.
How difficult is to to marry up the engine to the tranny in place? Can I just hand crank the engine to get the gears to line up with the transmission?
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!
