Jeez now I feel stupid. Put the car up in the air on jackstands to prepare for tranny removal. First thing I did was to grab the shifter assembly from underneath and lo and behold, the bolts were loose!!! The one that has a small slot for alignment only had a few threads holding it so who knows how long till I would have been along side the road stranded. Pulled all the bolts out, pulled the shifter out of the way and found a longer bolt for the upper and nutted it as well. Put red lock tite on the bottom two and snugged it real good. She's not going anywhere anytime soon!!

Thanks for all the advice, but I think I'll be ready to align it properly and get the clutch adjusted once and for all.
It is too late to change now, but red Lock Tite was not the wise choice in that situation. I predict a broken bolt when you have to take that shifter out. It may not be soon, but at one time or another the trans is going to come out of that car. When it does you will have to remove the shifter first. I don't even use the blue stuff on the shifter bolts. I just tighten them down good. Not ever been a problem.
