I decided to give McAfee a try on my home computer since it appears to have more features than Nortons. I paid online and downloaded the software. It appeared to load ok but locked up the computer when I hit the last "finish" button. Restarted the computer and no response from the mouse (it moves but clicking does not start anything). Restarted in safe mode, turned off McAfee and everything works ok. Turned on auto scan and still works but when I turn on Active?? it locks up the mouse again? McAfees "help" doesn't have a topic for this. Any ideas? Luckily I didn't kill Nortons and have that running again.

Did you remove Norton before loading Macafee? You can not have both running at the same time as it will cause many problems, especially if you are running Win98 as both of the programs will hog practically all the memory available. After having used both between home and work either one will do a satsifactory job as long as you keep the virus definitions updated.

If you did not remove the Norton first, I would de-activate the Macafee and then try to get Norton removed. You may end up having to deinstall both programs and then install the one you decide to use.

Good luck
Jeff

Norton has a removal program on the Symantec site that you can download. It will remove the different versions of NAV before installing a newer Norton or another program.
Sorry don't have the link handy.

UPDATE - I uninstalled Nortons and McAfee appears to be running ok. What a battle. It took half a dozen trys starting in safe mode to get it so both would not start automatically. For some reason if either started and detected the other it locked up the unit. Thanks again for the suggestions, you guys are great.

It happened to me too, had Norton installed from the factory and tried to install McAffee. Someone said it was like two virus programs detecting each others processes as virus activity, sending both programs into endless loops, which makes bootups last for 15 minutes and then bogs the computer down to the point where it will just barely move. I hope more people read this post, from what I have learned from my little escapade it seems to be a common problem. Most computers come with a basic virus check preinstalled, and if you don't know about this possible problem, you'll be in trouble if you install another virus scanner later. I think there was a warning popping up during the installation, but it should have said "Uninstall your present virus scanner OR ELSE" :D
