Houston I have a problem...Ive run into a casting number of 387000 ......even if the the 8 is a 9 like 397000 I cant find it......looks to be a 8 though...

Ive looked for it on the Mortec sight but it isnt there.....it is supposed to be a 400SB, but It doesnt have the bulges in the sides and it doesnt have a notched ballancer.....Im confused....any help would be appreciated..

It was in a 77 3/4 ton Surburban matched with a 400 turbo tranny. ..it has a quadrajet carb on it as well.

Thank you in advance for any help. Remy
If it does not have the bulges at the cylinders it is not a 400
If it does not have the "notched" damper & is stock it is not a 400
Same with the flexplate, stock it has a weight.

As Tom said, it sounds like a 3970010 4"bore block.

To the best of my knowledge all 400's end in 817, 509 or 511 but with GM I learned long ago to never say always,,

Ill look at the heads tomorrow night,

the last numbers are 000 there is no other numbers it could be,, they are real plain and clear......... 2 freeze plugs on each side.
=
400's came with
2 freeze plugs with no center casting for the third
2 freeze plugs with a raised casting for the third that was not machined
3 freeze plugs
I have never seen a 400 with three freeze plugs that was not a 4-bolt.
This does not mean GM never did it,,,, as I said with GM never say never or always,, :D

But all 400's I have ever seen & this is a lot in the last 30+ years have the cooling bulges that run vertically at each bore.
Very easy to feel with your hand.

Mike,
Now you've seen one.
This is the 400 block that I just had machined to replace the cracked one that was in my jet boat.
Its a 511 block with an H 11 72 date code (Aug 11, 72). Years ago, I pulled it out of a 73 4dr Impala. Obviously, it would have been a very early production 73.

Hi Tom,
LOL,,, as I said I never say never or always with GM, I figured there were probably 2 bolt ones but can't ever remember doing one.
Now if you can find a 4 bolt with two,,,,, :D

And the 2 bolt is my block of choice when it comes to a 400, webbing is stronger.

350 is a different deal due to the narrow registers.
Excellent pic of the vertical bulges for Remy too
