I’m looking for some opinions. I’m building a 427 Big block for my 67 Chevelle. My former boss, an established builder of high performance engines, has selected a standard 454 mark 4 block for me for us to use in the build. It began its life as a two bolt main engine but he machined it for splayed 4 bolt billet caps and line honed. The block will need to be bored 30 over. We plan on putting a hydraulic roller cam in it, AFR heads, and 10.5:1 pistons. I plan to limit horsepower to 550 or so. That’s my choice. I’m putting a Holley Stealth EFI system on it and it will support 600hp. That an I when I was younger, I went nuts on building a 440 engine for my 68 Charger. That damn thing was way too difficult to keep on the street. I don’t want to go down that road, again.
Lately I’ve been leaning toward going with a Dart Sportsman block. My former boss says they are awesome blocks and can get one in a a few days if I wanted one but it will blow the 10k budget I allocated for the build.
So the question is, what to use. What do I gain by using a Dart block, besides getting a virgin block with better lifter bores for hydraulic lifters? Is it worth the additional 2.25k for the Dart? I’m not pushing huge hp. I’ve cut no corners with anything I’ve done to this vehicle. Is the extra cost of the block over kill for what I’m planning to build?
Thanks in advance!
Joe
