I've been told that my intake is the likely culprit for my cowl induction air cleaner assembly not fitting under the hood. How much should I expect to pay for an LS-6 intake manifold in good used condition? Where can I source one of these and feel confident in what I'm getting?

I'll see if I can get the numbers off it tonight. It looks like a stock cast iron unit so I didn't think there would be any problems getting the CI air cleaner assembly in. I tried with and without the carb spacer. I haven't tried to remove the carb gasket between the carb/intake but its not a phenolytic unit or anything thick enough to make the difference I need. A couple of pictures, allthough not optimal can be seen here... http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/jagarang/vwp?.dir=/Chevelle&.src=ph&.dnm=chevelle02.jpg&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/bc/jagarang/lst%3f%26.dir=/Chevelle%26.src=ph%26.view=t ...the intake runners are not much higher than the thermostat housing...were the LS-6 intake lower than this?

Some of those intakes like already mentioned are actually reverse-risers so they would fit! Period..

That's why E-brock made the Torquer b/c it is about the lowest "performance" intake there is for this application and does fit but it really isn't all that "balls out" a manifold but it does do better then the stock one..

Sorry it took so long to get these numbers...

Snowflake on #2 intake runner with W in center.
Behind carb....3933163 with large GM lettering below it.

Another related question....the hose connecting my PCV valve to the base of my carb is collapsing on deceleration and at idle? Its not "whining" under deceleration since it nearly squeezes itself shut.
If I pull the valve out of the valve cover grommet its fine, however if I remove the valve from the end of the hose is sucks hard. If I cap it with a finger the hose will collapse at idle and expand under increased throttle. The whinning when the hose collapses is ANNOYING.
Could this be an improper picece of tubing the prior owner installed, perhaps a more rigid walled hose would be better?

Put a stiffer piece of hose on the pcv.

Make sure you are using a hose designed for fuel. If the hose is collapsing, it is likely saturated and has become soft. This will greatly effect the performance and runablitly of the engine.

When I had to find the correct intake for my 396 (I was looking for the correct date and casting #)

I found this gentleman's site and I tell ya it was a smooth easy process. He was quick and the intake looks like brand new.

HTH.

What I should have said is fuel/oil vapors will soften it. I did not mean to imply that liquid fuel runs through it. Sorry for the confusion.
