Is this a good intake choice for 496?

Hello again. I'm finishing up my 496 build for my 67. I wanted to get you guys feedback on intakes. First, a short run down of the motor. 496, 9:5 / 1 compression. cast 049 heads that have really been worked ( flow dead on with dart iron eagle heads ) 850 holley double pumper, howards big daddy rattler cam 600/583 lift, 243/251 dur @50, LS: 109, power range 2500-6200.
4 speed, 12 bolt, probably 3:55 or 3:73 gears. This is a street driver that will see some track time but more of a weekend bruiser. I was going to run what a lot of you guys run: the air-gap. Then I read the air gap won't clear the factory SS hood, which I just bought.

Well, I met this Chevelle guy yesterday on some a arms and brakes. He had two intakes that caught my eye. First, he had a elde c427x that was built for the Yenko cars / 427, dual plane but square port. I was like, I have 049 heads, I can't run a square port intake on oval port heads. He said yes you can, you just can't run a oval port intake on square port heads. I did some homework and from all the information I read, this is not an ideal pick for what I'm doing. I read of serious leaks, loss of flow, power loss, etc. He said they sell for about $400, he'd sell it to me for $125 cash. I'm leaning towards NOT buying this intake even though it might be rare? I don't know.

Here's the one I really need some advice on. He had an older Elde TM2-O, Tarantula in great shape. I mean it looked really good and I've always been a huge fan of this intake because of nostalgia, the cross runners, etc. So, I did my homework but I'm kinda on the fence. I found out it was the forerunner of the Torker 2. Then I looked at rpm range: 2,500-6,500 (dead on with my cam). However ,it's a single plane. I read several articles that dogged out the Torker unit. The articles had better results with the performer series. He wants $100 cash which looks like about the going rate, I think. Sooooo, Is this a bad or good choice in terms of performance, street driving, hood clearance , thanks for any advice. I love the intake but I don't won't to buy something that simply is a bad fit for my application. THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT!!!

well, you got the two used choices wrong, steer clear of the "tarantula". one of those marketing things that never worked well. You can use a UltraSeal 5828 gasket to put rect intake on ovals if you so choose, or jsut buy a oval dual plane.

buy an oival port Perf RPM AG, ruin it. It's well known to be one of the best BB manifolds ever, been proven here time and time again. But hey, if you've got the time and money to re-invent the square wheel go ahead. knock yourself out. The RPM AGs will still be there when you get tired of it and just want your car to run good.

FWIW - On my 65 w/flat hood - I have a GenVI block w/ sq. port heads, sq. port AirGap, 850 Holley and 14" x 3" drop base air cleaner and it has about 3/4" clearance to the hood. And, a sq. port intake does work and work well on oval port heads - been there.

FS, it dont have to be an "air gap" either if you can rustle up a regular ol RPM, or even a decent -163 oem mani. ( same as the RPM internally it would seem).

As Jason said earlier, duals require a larger carb in effect, as the carb only "sees" half the engine. So if an 850 works perfectly on a dual, you could likely use a 800 on a single, for example. You will need all of 800 cfm on a dual plane with a 4.25" stroke at 6000 I 'd reckon , if not more depending on the engine's VE. ( motors dont have an exhaust, engines do, technically)

BTW, had an LT1 in a Nova as punk kid, tried the "torker" , tried the Holley street dominator and finally went back to the Z/28 oem which blew the others away. So there ya go. Junk. BBC/SBC no matter. What do all the hot street folks run here the 10 sec street cars, Torkers? Everyone uses an RPM or similar dual plane. Well NOT everyone, I m sure SOMEONE has a small DOMINATOR on a single plane Vick J. ;) But you get what I;m saying. The best sorted out combos use what you should buy for yours. Period.

He is wrong when he told you that you can't run an oval port intake on rectangular port heads. You absolutely can. Aftermarket intake anyway. I ran an oval port Victor jr on a set of aluminum 074 heads for several years.other intakes might be different but the Victor jr oval and the rectangle intakes look to be the same just one is cut out more. I eventually switched to a rectangular.

Rectangular port intake works just fine on oval port heads. They don't leak, lose power, etc.
It doesn't work for the arm chair "gearhead" experts with an opinion because they don't spin a wrench or drag race nor have any data on the swap.
They only have a "theory" as to why it shouldn't work.

I had an oval port on rectangular port heads. Idea was the car was heavy, didn't need rectangular heads, but I already had them, so I used the oval intake on the idea it would have more air velocity better low end. .

Got it....Sears and roebuck intake with one barrel carb and six plug wires and advance timing 20 degrees. OK...An air gap with drop plate and rather large filter is the answer. THANKS to everyone who helped me out!!

ANd dont let Todd confuse you, those 074s are pretty small rectangular ports , so the precise manifold, a VicJ is a bit bigger than most OVALS is nearly "roval", so that particular combo may work. Yet, ordinarily only the bass-ackwards rect port intake on oval heads is what we'd recommend. With a small rect port gasket like you;d use for 074s, UltraSeal 5828 size.
