Is a 1972 454 a good base for building a mild daily driver engine?

We have the opportunity to purchase a 1972 454 complete from carb to pan with all of the brackets as well. Compression check tests out at 130PSI per cylinder (fairly even across the board). I will have the casting numbers later tonight on the block and heads...but please give me your opinions on this engine. From what I remember...it's a 8.5 to one 265 net horsepower engine... Thanks for any and all opinions offered!! :beers:

Engine decodes to a 1973...not a 1972. Casting date is F1173 TRK and some numbers are on the pad which is a 240hp LS4 from a truck (in this case a 4x4) that was hooked up to a Turbo 400 It is a 3999289 with 353049's. :beers:

I think the former owner just put the flexplate back on there... So we did okay?

Ami I correct about the dates. etc...not that it really matters...LOL

see page 4 of BBC INFO thread for pics of car type oil pan.
The flexplate is on reversed. Ensure you turn it around before it goes into the project.
A VERY GREAT engine to run now/build later. 049 heads, 289 block...can't do a whole lot better unless it was free! While it is out, I would do an inspection bare minimum.

I went to that thread and a lot of the pics are missing now...but I will look again.

Thanks on noticing the flexplate. We will definitely do an inspection first. If all checks out okay, then before long it will be cleaned up and put into the 70...if it needs some work, then it'll just be a bit longer, that's all.

The best part is...we are all going to go through a great family learing experience:beers:

Thanks for everyone's help and opinions...

ok, in 2010 you bought the 454. Now you have a MJ 468 in March 2014.
Did I miss a few intermediate steps here? Maybe the intermediate steps are in another thread or two. I certainly remember you getting the engine years back and pics of the car, A REAL LOOKER!

What are the details? Are you REALLY running an iron pancake intake and Q-Jet?

Chris and George-thanks! We are really running the stock intake manifold and we found a chevy quadrajet to use...so the car appears to be mostly stock at first glance. It was built with reliability in mind-so it's mostly stock-with the exception of the Mark Jones "touches" and an Isky cam. Dyno numbers are right around 1hp per cubic inch (468 HP and 531 ft.lbs) on pump gas.

With the overdrive transmission (custom built 700R4) it's as docile as any daily driver...until you hit the go pedal. It will get sideways really quickly with the 3.31 posi at a 40mph roll:yes:

This car is being completed for my nephew-as a graduation gift. He's going to complete his 4 year degree at University of Arizona in 3 1/2 years...then off to law school :D

Expect to see more pics and video of it soon. BTW George-you didn't miss anything. The engine sat until September of last year. Mark completed the engine build right before Christmas....:beers:

I am assuming that this engine is the one you got back in 2010, which was a great score.

Good solid street power. Well done.

Hi Jackie-this is that engine:yes:.

The car is a blast:D. I don't know if my nephew will get a chance to drive it ;)

Thanks all for the compliments....I'll make sure to show him this post!

Gives me yet another reason to catch my younger brother at home in Scottsdale or older brother at his (not quite) retirement home in Sedona/Oak Creek Canyon.

Let me know how it cruises with the 3.31 and OD. Hell, Arizona 'cruise' speed is 75 so probably no issues at all with the mild gearing

George- Will do. We wil have in car footage-and some gopro action as well tomorrow night :)

BTW, let me know when you are out this way-we'd definitely get together~~
