In terms of 0 vs 10deg advanced… i usually line it up to 0 mark on balancer (both valves closed as 123pugsy said). Then while cranking i turn the distributor by had until it fires up. You can absolutely line it up to the 10degree advanced mark. If starting by yourself this is the easier way to go. The way i do it someone has to crank while i’m rotating the distributor in 1 hand with the timing gun in the other.
