Engine is a '66 283 2bbl, Stock Distro, Blaster II coil. Dwell is set at 30*, we've tried timing from 4* to 8* advance, car doesn't want to idle ANYWHERE, opening the throttle leads to popping. Timing is highly erratic.

We set the dwell with the vacuum line on, is this right? We did set timing with it off and plugged at the carburetor.

Thanks.

dwell is dwell on this dizzy.
will engine idle with about 12* advance with the vacuum line plugged??
it kinda sounds like one spark plug wire is in the wrong order on the dizzy cap???
coil terminals are correctly hooked up with the black dizzy wire to the (-)neg terminal??
hope this helps:thumbsup:

is this a new engine or were you just doing a tune-up or what? what was the motivation to start working on it in the first place?

Is it a RED Blaster II coil, fairly new, Made in Mexico or Made in China on the bottom? If so, take the coil to an auto parts store and have it checked on a running machine, one that tests the coil off the engine, under running conditions. If you have a stock coil, put it back on the engine and see if the problem continues. Most Auto Zone stores have run testers and will load test the coils for free.

Engine has 133k original miles on it, never re-ringed. Car began to come out of tune, points looked nasty so I replaced them, went from an Accel set to Carquest. Parts counter guy sold me the wrong condenser so the one from the accel set is still in there.

It is indeed a Made In China Blaster II Coil, and I did keep the stock coil.

And, get a new condenser. Breakdown of the condenser is usually the cause of 'burned' points. And check the lead going from the points/condenser junction to the coil. They tend to rub bare under the points mounting plate and will short when the plate moves with vacuum signal. Seen it several times...........

How much endplay is in your dizzy bushings? When I pulled the dizzy there were no brash spacers/bushings between the gear and housing. This caused me massive timing issues, worked at idle but would advance and retard at random while driving.
