I officially leaving tomorrow morning at 6AM to head to Bowling Green Kentucky from Moreno Valley, CA. I see that the I40 is shorter by about 50 miles compared to the I10.

Is one highway a better route than the other? The 40 looks like it might be a hair cooler, temperature wise. Also might have more rest stops and gas stations and such. But I've heard that its rougher due to all the trucks on it and that there is usually some sort of construction going on.

I think at the end of the day its still going to be a long, boring drive. Just trying to see which way would be the easiest. I'm not stopping to sight see or anything, purely putting the pedal to the medal and hammering it out.

Thanks for the input!

I'd take I-40 to Nashville and then a short drive up I-65 to Bowling Green.
I took I-10 years ago to go to New Mexico and still remember how it was the most pot hole ridden road I've ever been on especially through Louisiana. Holes bigger than the van I drove a bunch of scouts to Philmont in.
It will be quite a bit cooler also on I-40.
Surprises me that there is only a 50 mile difference.
Have a safe trip whichever way you travel.

I don't know about I-40, but I-10 will also get you Border Patrol checkpoints; probably at least one per state (CA,AZ,and TX have them east-bound; NM has one west-bound ). They can get backed up. They'll have drug sniffing K-9s. I'm just saying....

My vote would go for I40...it pretty well parallels old US66. I've driven I 10 too and it's a really 'barren' route. Not much to see and if it rains like it did to me in AZ, I had to pull off the highway and wait for it to stop...super frog-washer!!! What are you driving? If a Chevelle, you'd also have better luck getting parts and/or service on I40, also more places with motels/hotels to stay the night. My .$02

I spent over 35 years running back and forth to So.Cal. from the east coast. If your going to run I 10,you'll also be hooking up to I 20,I 30,then I 40 in Little Rock.I 40 will be a little cooler esp. if you spend the nite in Flag. The southern route will be hot,esp this time of year.I personally liked the south route, even though it was slightly longer,it has less hills.A plus when your hauling heavy equipment.I used to switch back and forth 40 out 10 back,or vice versa, break up the monotony.I you do do take 40,stop at the Big Texan steak house in Amarillo, you'll enjoy it!

My gf and I took Route 66 one day. We stopped at an old gas station/Cafe. It was a neat place. We bought some Coca-Cola, it was in the old school bottles.

We were on the AL/FL portion of I-10 last weekend. I've also driven it over into LA...bypassing New Orleans on I-12.
Hate that road. :(

I have made the trip many times hauling race cars from Daytona to Fontana Calif. Forget all the Interstates try " U.S. Air or Delta " that is my thoughts !

40, nice drive except through Texas. There's a whole lotta nothing there.
Yeah, that's called the panhandle.

I-10 through west Texas is much more scenic. You might also want to consider I-30 and I-20.

But I-40 does run alongside route 66 in some places!

I just drove OKC to CB11 I-40 round trip. There is a SHORT strip of construction in eastern Okla where one side is diverted over to the other side and down to 1-lane each way. But traffic moves smoothly.
When I get almost into Nashville, I get onto the Briley Parkway (Interstate type hiway) which goes around the west side of Nashville and connects into I-65 on the north side of Nashville. This totally bypasses the traffic trying to get through N'ville on I-40, I-24, I-65. I would REALLY encourage you to consider using the Briley Parkway. They just finished the construction last year on the Briley Parkway where it ties into I-40 and the transition off of I-40 and onto Briley is REAL smooth and easy.

I prefer I-40 as well. I-10 is pretty much desert with nothing to seebut sand and tumble weeds. I-40 is a really nice drive with plenty of stuff to see. New mexico has a nice Indian Casino, sky City I think it`s called. Stayed there a couple times but don`t remember the exact name. There is a route 66 casino up the road from it too. Over all a much better drive.

Made it to Bowling Green this afternoon. Tom DZ, passed through Mustang/KC yesterday. Is that a museum off the 40? I saw a white B29. Is it real or fake?

Thanks for the 155 tip too. Took that and avoided all that Nashville traffic.
Tim,
No, no fake B29. That's one of the planes that is on static display in front of Tinker AFB, which is where I work-----------------for 6 more months!
Then I'm going to tell my supervisor to pucker up and kiss where the sun don't shine! :D

I thought you'd like taking the Briley Parkway (155) around the west side of N'ville. Not much traffic was there!
