I am workin on a 71 with a newly rebuild 350 just installed. I am 20 years old and am kinda learnin as I go, but I am stuck at my next step. I have the engine in with the drive chain, fuel pump and exhaust manifolds all installed. My next step is to install the distributor but I first need to find top dead center. Is there anyone in the chester county, pa area that wouldn't mind helping me out when I get stuck. Or give me steps to find the top dead center.

Welcome to TC, Chris----:D

Maybe you might try your questions in the engine forum to get some quick response.

It's really not that hard to find TDC to install the distributor. I would post your question in the Engine section, as noted above. You will get plenty of help from there.

Chris,
Search for words such as: find top dead center and you should see lots of info. Remember you want the TDC compression. With a freshly built engine, the builder should have verified the timing indicator near the crank harmonic damper is set correctly to indicate zero degrees at TDC for #1 cylinder.
Also, the distributor body does not have to be oriented at a specific rotational position. It's the orientation of the rotor to the #1 terminal that is important.

You can also search for: install distributor etc.

Good luck with the drive chain, I thought that was eliminated with the 68 model!
Just kidding.
Welcome to the show.
If you do searches in the engine section, you will get the info you need.
Have fun and welcome.

To find top dead center to stab in your distributor do the following:

remove the number 1 spark plug and put your finger on the hole and have someone tap - tap - tap the key until you feel air coming out of the #1 spark plug hole (compression stroke) try to stop it at the top of the cylinder thats TDC.
Now check to see your timing mark on the harmonic balance and verify the timing pointer is at 0 mark.

thats how to get the engine at TDC!

next you want to verify the #1 spark plug spot on the distributor and point that towards the front of the engine and drop the distributor in.

run the wires and fire her up and time it correctly.

if its a vacuume advance set the total timing to 35 degrees and be done with it.
