ok i bought a 71 chevelle about 8 months ago, with a 245HP turbo fire 350 suffix code CGC, well a guy stopped by my house today saying the engine is his, he bought a chevelle to restore and when he had it apart he let his cousin barrow the #'s matching engine, well the engine ended in another chevelle, that sat at his uncles house, then was given away, then i bought it, so i have this guys engine, he has $25k invested in his chevelle, and can't get the engine back, what should i charge him for it?

If I was in your shoes, and I could afford it, I'd give it to him. If he insisted on compensating me somehow, I'd maybe see if he had something worth trading for it. I wouldn't try to get rich off this guy...or rip him off in any way. What do you need out of the deal...enough $ to buy/build an engine a little nicer than that one?

This could go a few directions, depending on who you are, and what you have invested in this engine. Definately get your $ back, but to me, this wouldn't be a "how much, I can get" scenario. Maybe you let him make an offer, It might be generious enough to catch your interest.

Here's how I'd look at it.
Am I using it?
If so, how much to replace it?
What is the true value of the engine without the oiginal owner wanting it?
This could easily turn into a hostage situation.
I guess what I'm Trying to say is, what do you think is fair???
I know a few guys who would take advantage of this situation....I would be as resonable as possible...

i'm just planning on pulling it out, i found a turnkey 454 for $500, the car is parked right now, so should i let it go for $500 and get a 454? he threatened to take me to court over the engine, so he wants it bad

If he has threatened you with court action, screw him and keep it. For him to actually prove anything is impossible with the "I lent him the motor BS". If the man could have been civil and reasonable I would have said give him a good deal, but now, he should be on his own. It's a low HP small block, not an LS-6 or L-89 for god's sake.

i would've just sold it for enough to get my 454, but he demanded that i give it to him or he would press charges, now he found out that he can't do anything about it, but he's already pissed me off

x2:yes:

He sounds like a real nice guy. Tell him you won't take less than $5,000 for it since you figure that's what he will end up spending in court fees anyway.:D

Unless of course you said or did something that would make him threaten you like that?

I was all for being very reasonable with the guy until I read he threatened you. If someone threatens me with legal action in a situation like that I would tell them they blew their chance. I am a very reasonable person, but don't come at me with crap or I will turn into a real hard ass.

i told him i was going to pull it out soon, and i would contact him and work out a deal when it was out, and he kept saying it was his and he wasn't giving me anything for it, so i told him to bring on the cops, and hour later he was back asking for a price, i'm thinking of draining the oil and letting him see its final burnout :D just for threatening me

Take it out, take a 20 pound sledge to it and give him the piece of the block pad that matches the #'s on his car!

Obviously, I would not do this but if anyone treated me the way he treated you, yhis would definitely come to mind! Do whatever you feel is right and don't worry about what anyone else thinks.

I'd go with this idea... ruining the motor out of spite doesn't help you at all and realistically, the motor is worth more to him than any other buyer you might find for it... so take a reasonable selling price, add some $$$ (like the $500 above) to the price for your "pain and suffering" of dealing with a d--k! and you will have some money to put towards your new motor... and best of all, do it all with a big smile like you are doing him a favour... i believe in karma, no point in stooping to his level (although it would be fun!)!

Yeah, tell him to back off or you'll take a grinder to the engine pad. What kind of azzhat sinks $25,000 into a car, and THEN goes back to retrieve the original engine that he "lent" to someone. Sounds like he doesn't have both of his oars in the water.
Although his problem really lies with his "cuz", I would probably sell him the engine for the cost of what you want to replace it with. Sounds like he would give you too much grief if you tried to just shut the door in his face, although I might string it out for awhile just for a little satisfaction.

I'd melt it down and give it to him.:D

really take you to court.:noway: he wouldn't have a chance on court.

I think I would look at how the engine was presented to me when I bought the car and your plans for it then. Did the cousin make a big deal about the thing or was it simply a non numbers engine that ran ok? Were U gonna pull it and shove the damn thing into the corner anyway. If yes, you have your answer, its core money anyway. It just sucks that Captain Numb Nuts doesn't realize that U dont owe him anything. I say do the right thing within reason and remember, what goes around comes around!
Good Luck

Let's see here. You buy the car, then this guy show's up saying it's his engine in it and he want's it back, then he said's he's going to take you to court and then comes back and wants to buy the engine now???? Well, well, well!!! You say you can get a 454 for $500.00. I would get that engine and see what all it is going to cost you to drop that 454 in there and hook it all up to get it running and then give him a price for what it took to get the 454 in and running and that would be what it took for him to get his engine back!! He can pay you, and his cousin can pay him back. That is between them. But you need a engine for the car you bought that has a engine in it allready, and he wants to just take the engine????????????? {I don't think so!!!} If he want's the engine back for his number matching chevelle to be a number matching chevelle,,, he will pay you whatever price you need to get out of it, to put the 454 in there. If he don't want to pay for the engine, take it out and sell it. Get you some money out of for your 454. Think about what your going to be out and don't worry about him. His problem should be with his cousin!!!!!!!!!! Not you. Just my 2 cents worth..

"When your values are clear to you, making decisions becomes easier." Roy Disney

How you handle this will be one of your defining moments. After this situation comes and goes you will be left with the type person you are. Do not let his personality determine that. The rest of your life is in front of you not his and even though this battle has become personal to you, winning the war is far more important.

Place a value on this motor based on this incident never happening and the guy never showing up. You will like yourself a lot more.

Good advice. I'd assign a reasonable value to it, and tell the guy when he shows up with the money AND an apology, he can have it.

#31 ·
I would probably sell it to him. But the bf sledgehammer idea popped into my head too! :D

$500 seems like a reasonable price, then you can get that 454.

If he doesn't like it, tell him he is trespassing on your property and you don't want to see
him again.

It would depend if he's a nice guy or a JERK. I would at least get enough to cover the replacement engine and a few needed parts for my replacement engine. Who's to say this was really his engine to begin with? Sounds like to me this guy is trying to get him self a free engine with a BS story which I would get every damn dime I could out of the JERK and send him on his way. Someone coming to my house acting like he did would have had a boot up his ass, leaving with out a engine.
