I finally found my perfect muffler

Ever since I put the Chevelle on the road after the frame off I have been trying to find a muffler that I love. I found it!! I have tried em all...Flowmasters, Dynomax, Magnaflow, all three models of Pypes. While they were all good they never just checked all the boxes for me.

Borla XR1's check every box for me! They give me the sound I have always wanted, deep rumble at idle, no drone and a rich tone when you put the throttle to it..love em!

I agree. My Dynomax Ultraflows are way too tame at idle. I miss my flowmasters.

The best sounding mufflers you have never heard of are SpinTech. I have the ProStreet 6000 version. Way, way better than any FlowDisaster offering. Lots of options in size, configuration and sound levels. Plus helpful dimensions, ordering information, videos. Nope, no connection with them. Just a satisfied user.

Beautiful car and sounds good too! Very timely discussion as I have Flowmaster 44's on my car and they are too loud. It is a stock L78 engine with stock manifolds. OK at idle but they drone on the highway and they "rap" on acceleration, like old Thrush bottles from back in the day so I am looking for a change and find Magnaflows pretty quiet.

You really need nice headers on an L78. Then mufflers are secondary! Nothing like the sound of solid lifters on a 396. I admit to being biased as that is what I had on my stock L78 ‘67 and you never forget that awesome sound...you hear more engine sound over the sound of the mufflers alone.

Pat,

Thanks for the video to be used as a reference.

After you mentioned the Pypes tailpipes fitting better than the Flowmaster tailpipes I looked to see if Pypes sells them separately and couldn't find them. Were you able to buy the tails separately? The way tailpipes fit, in fact, the whole exhaust system is a BIG pet peeve of mine on some of these systems or the way some people install them. My ears perk up when you say, ...the Pypes look and fit sooooo much better. BTW, any comparison pics to illustrate your point?

I second and third the XR 1 mufflers. My goal is a "more quiet than open headered exhaust". I run Vibrant 3.5" x 9" mufflers off the collectors for the track but they set off every car alarm in the neighborhood when I drive in the city. I don't really care to upset the neighbors so I am getting some 3" to the rear axle exhaust done next week with 3" ZR 1's as mufflers. I
won't put an X pipe on there as I want to be able to quickly r&r the exhaust for the track using the Vibrant "collector extensions". Down side is that the exhaust with the Borla's is about + 55lbs over the Vibrant pieces. I do appreciate the Borla XR 1 muffler sound and performance, especially with an X pipe.
