When I was in high school in the late 80's I had a 68 Elky with the fastest 307 2 barrel the world had ever seen. The th350 would rip second and chirp third and the 3.55 posi worked its charm. Now, jump ahead 20 years. I now have a 70 Malibu with the same trans and 12 bolt 3.55 posi and a 307 with a better cam, 4 barrel and 1.94 valves. It runs good for what it is but it ain't fast, it is faster than the old El Camino and that is the cold hard truth you find hidden in the past when you build a time machine.

Greetings from Arizona
I have a 307 in my 68 Malibu...orginal engine and powergluide with a twist.......The orginal owner had it gone thru in the early 90's
according to paper work the orginal "Doc's engine" here in Tucson spent almost 2k rebuilding engine...balanced/blueprinted and unknown what else inside because Doc wouldn't ever tell how he got his small blocks to go fast but I can tell you that it runs very well in that car..........

noooooo i had the fastest 307 in the whole world, back in 1991 i threw a quadrajet, headders, and stickers on my first '70, it had a powerglide, and a bungee cord holding my battery in place, aw man those cooper cobra tires would spin for 5 feet when i nailed it. no seriously if you build a time machine go back to the day i tried to race a saleen mustang and feel free to laugh.

you have to remember, back in the day, cars were slow, so if you had a car that ran particularly well, it felt like a rocket. i had a little buick with a 231 odd fire in it, we used to smoke "muscle cars" with it all the time.

the cars back then weren't put together very well, so when you had one that had been done right, it really made a difference. it was not uncommon to hear a new hemi, or b.b. chevy had grenaded.

your 307 probably runs better today than you think, but compared to all the twin cam, and other engines of today, it might feel down on power.

just an example, i have a 1961 car life on my desk. a SUPER CHARGED tempest "a whirlwind of performance" 0-60 7 seconds, 1/4 mile 15.5. corvair 0-60 15.5 seconds 1/4 mile 20.3 @ 68 m.p.h.

for the time, and a sequense of good luck matching parts, and your elky was probably pretty quick for the day.

i doubt my 231 odd fire could out run a decent accord today, but back in the day, we gave "hot rods" fits, from stop light to stop light. i loved that car, today, i know it's a glorified vega, and the reason you don't see them any more, is they were p.o.s.'s, but when your young, and speed is new, they felt like they were flying. in high school, i was lucky enough to drive a friends sorted out 454 nova, then i knew there was a whole nother world of fast...

Hey my time machine was fast. for being in the 80s. I had a el camino with a 305 it was my first engine build, fireball crane cam, rhodes lifters (remember those) alum intake, rochester 4 barrel that was race prep built by a local known for stubby secondary's, black jack headers, heads and intake were gasket matched with a file by me, flex fan, and every thing that added weight but not make HP was removed. My first street race and I smoked a
corvette twice, remember in 89 the fastest american production car was a v6.
I miss that car.

I have a vintage time machine that was actually built in the 80's....unfortunately speed and emmisions on the 80's built time machine presents lots of problems. Mainly, it takes 15 minutes to travel roughly 10 minutes back in time and occassionally it malfunctions, reorganizes body parts.....and you end up with your penis on your knee and you gotta tweak the rabbit ears and redial the tinfoil to get things back where they should be. Damn the 80's sucked.

I didnt have any 307 2 bbl cars that would smoke em through 3rd gear....but thats probably because I didnt have the brake system problems up front that caused lock up and drag on the brakes. You guys should of fixed that. :D
