Need a little help setting the valves on a running adjustment. I have a old valve cover cut to help prevent a mess. Do I want to back off each nut until it chatters and then tighten 1/4, 1/2, - full turn or just take the chatter out?

To be certain here when rotating from TDC #1 in 90 degree increments your adjusting both the intake and exhaust?

Not 100% but if you read some of my early post I believe it is a solid lift so I can't adjust them while running, correct?

I tried to adjust them because of a tick on the drivers side and while I had them open adjusted them all. I guess a small tick would be pretty common for a solid lift? If I don't know what lift cam is in there can the valve lash be set to something kind of standard? Im guessing from the idle of the car its not to big and does not sound to lopey.

OK bought this engine not knowing if it has solid or hydrualic lifters. I just tried to adjust the valves two different ways. First brought 1 tdc and adjusted 4 ex and 4 int according to book, then brought 6 tdc and adjusted the rest. Took each one 1/2 turn. Tried to start and sounded like there was no compression, wouldn't begin to fire. Second adj. did the EOIC method took half turn and same result. Repeated step one and same result.
I back each one off a little more than a 1/2 turn and it fired right up. Does this mean I have a solid lift?

The following EOIC method..... is this the same for hydraulic?

With a solid I use the ex open intake close method which you can use also.
With a starter button or helper crank the engine until the exhaust valve just starts to open & adjust the intake.
You can turn it by hand if you need the excerise
Crank again until the intake valve is closing & adjust the exhaust.
This is the correct way to adjust valves with a performance cam, especially solids as it assures you you are on the base circle.

Well I tried this with the motor off. I ran it for about 10 minutes and then pulled the valve covers and adjusted them accordingly (#1 at tdc I adjusted 4 intakes and 4 exaust then brought #6 to tdc and adjusted the remainder). The car would not start after this, there was a lot of slack in the rockers before I adjusted them. So this is where I am now.... I backed off the rockers enough to get the car running again, I need to adjust from here and I figure doing it running will be best?

just to double check this is while the car is running correct? Everything I've read is with the motor off and turning the pushrod until resistance and go a 1/2 turn or so from there.
