I am trying to reinstall this spring (which I assume is to push the ignition key from start to run when released) and am having no luck. I've got JIMl82's documents and figures, but I still just don't get it. If I stick it in as the figure shows, it will fall out of place when I operate the Rack. Is it supposed to attach to something???

thanks

I removed the rack and lock bolt, and noticed a spring that is installed on the casing where the rack slides up and down. Is this the pre-load spring? The spring I am trying to install looks very much like this one. It fell out when I separated the housing from the shroud. In reading the rebuild material I assumed that this spring was the preload spring. Now I'm not so sure. Any clues?
Thanks

i had mine apart not long ago (though it was a tilt/column shifted automatic) and i still dont know what youre talking about....any pics?

Here is a second picture (obviously taken at the same time as the above). However, the spring is in a slightly different position. I really don't know which one is correct. Please note the large block tooth on the plastic gear (sector). It MUST align with the large cutout tooth on the rack. That is the only way things will work correctly when you put things back together.

ahh, now i remember...thnx again jim, i gotta tell ya, the majority of my questions to this forum that were of a most pressing importance at that particular time (leaking power steering unit, jeep GC swap, column assembly) you answered (or at least, pointed me to the answer i needed, which is no small feat in itself, though youve made it as easy as possible by archiving all the valuable info that you have) quickly, cohesively, completly and correctly, thank you again for all the help you render

I pulled the rack out of the housing, and there is a spring present which the rack slides against, and is in the position shown in fig 22 above, so maybe the spring I am messing with is not the preload spring. I tried to attach a photo of it, but I am apparently not allowed to. Here is a pic of the clip

(I hope the image appears, when I previewed this post it did not, and I don't know if that is normal or not)

It didn't work, so here is the url: www.users.qwest.net/~gear1head/springclip.htm

I am sure that the above part is the spring clip that holds the key buzzer switch in place. It clips around the switch and you press the assembly into the Turn Signal Switch Housing.

This picture should explain it all.

Hmmm. That could be. When I extracted the key buzzer switch it fell apart. I didn't look to see if there was a clip in the cavity that the switch came from. As I couldn't find a replacement part for this switch, I was going to leave it out. I didn't look at the schematics, but I assume that the presense of the key completes the circuit thus causing the buzzer to activate. By leaving the switch out I assume that the buzzer would be inactive under all conditions. Does this seem correct?

The two brass legs of the key buzzer switch contact two separate pads on the underside of the turn signal switch. Eliminating the buzzer switch should just prevent continuity between the two pads. Therefore, no buzzer.
