I am interested in a car that is purported to be a 71 SS. I don't know a whole lot about Chevelles so I don't know what to look for to determine that the car is a "real" SS. Secondly, I don't know what a "real" (numbers matching) SS in good condition should bring.
Right now, I do not have the VIN or the tag info from the firewall.
The car has a 454 w/ th 400 trans. It has 12 bolt Posi, round gauges in the dash with tach, remote driver side mirror, bucket seats, and center console. It is a hard top with black interiorand 91,000 miles showing on the odometer.
The car looks pretty good, visually. Engine supposedly recently rebuilt to factory spec., with receipts. The interior is good with some slight issues - white scaling of plastic seat parts, missing cig. lighter, but no rips, etc. A lot of exterior chrome replacved. Rear bumper rechromed, so most of the chrome is bright.
The paint (not original) has a couple of issues - a slight blister starting just above the bumper in the rear. Gravel flakes behind rear wheels where somebody has had fun. Doors seem solid. Don't know how to tell if there is body putty anywhere, but car looks straight.
When I go back to look at the car I can try to match the numbers from the engine to the VIN. If it matches, do I have an SS? Could you get a non-SS 454 in 71? If the answer is "yes", then what "giveaways" should I look for to determine the car is "real"?
Whaere should I look for a build sheet or something in the car that would be conclusive?
The owner wants $10,500. What should a real SS bring and given the above description, is this reasonable?
Thanks guys!
