I pulled out my steering gear box to fix the leaking and was wondering if I should change the rag joint? Iy looks to be in pretty good shape, no idea if it is original or not, but looks pretty good. What are some signs that the joint needs to be replaced, and how do I go about changing it if it needs it?

Thanks,
Bill C.

I don't know what to tell you to look for, but I had a bad experience with one that looked slightly worn, but serviceable (to my untrained eyes)... it was on my 1969 Blazer with slightly oversized tires. Left front tire blew-out and the rag joint broke. I went through a median into oncoming traffic. It wasn't pretty. If you have any doubt, I'd change it.

I wrecked my '67 SS396 Chevelle because the rag joint broke. I ran it off in a ditch about 6 feet deep backwards and screwed up the left rear quarter. Could have been a lot worse.
