how to change gears for newbies

What you want to do isn't advisable. Different housings require different pinion and carrier shim setups. Different pinions have different depth requirements (controlled by shims). So the possiblilty of it coming out right is remote. I would keep the gear/carrier unit with the housing it's in unless you want to have an experienced person set it up for you.
