Looking to see what you did to paint your engine... I am in the process of building a big block and would like to know if you spray painted yours or used a rattle can ? I have seen guys go to the extreme of sanding down and smoothing edges as well. Please post a pic of your engine along with information on what you used to make it look good.
Thank You

The big block with the tunnel ram was painted 16 years ago.
It got a mild degreaser wipe down after it was removed from my car and that is about it. Still looks real good for being 16 year old paint. IMHO
The small block was just painted about 3 months ago and has not been fired up yet.
The big block in my car was touched up about 4 years ago.

I use Duplicolor DE1620 spray paint for all 3 of them. Laquer thinner wipe down, followed by a red scotch brite pad, another wipe down with thinner and 3 light coats.
Simple and it works for me.

Brake cleaner, HT Primer and HT spray can.Been 10+ years.

I don't think I'd waste a whole lot of time on it because by the time you hang all of the accessories on it, you only see a little bit. I smoothed all of the sharp edges, but that is because I hate getting cut by a jagged edge.

My 502 short block was originally black, but IMHO '69 Chevelles ought to have Chevy Orange. I sprayed mine with high temp engine paint and several coats of clear. It is really nice and smooth, but again, you really cant see a whole lot of the engine.

I have painted a few engines with acrylic enamel car paint. It looks great and holds up much better than rattle can engine paint.

^^^What Mark said, you don't see much when they're together :D Mine was painted with VHT out of a rattle can.

POR-15 "titanium"
done 10 yrs ago been through a rebuild looks the same

Dont smooth your block out paint doesnt want to seem to stick as well

To do it over would have used a glossy Ford grey or something like the other posters pic. Todays rattlecan is pretty good lasts a long time. Too many motors in orange wanted something different

Would be fun to something with stockish valve covers, no chrome and some kind of paint job that mimic'ed old and dirty
big snorkel air cleaner off a 454 dually. :)maybe some white ceramic coat headers

I used to use my spray gun and paint from a local paint shop, but stopped for around ten years ago and started using spray cans from plasikote(PLK200 orange and PLK228 primer)with good result. I use primer and chevy orange over it since I discovered it takes less paint and the orange gets better coverage when using primer.

My 489 painted with above spray cans ten years ago. Not much orange except the block and oil pan. But it holds up good.
The engine on the stand is a 454 Im putting together as a spare engine.

 Simple, just drive it home from a car show in the rain.

Scraped all the crusty greasy crud off it, wire wheeled the whole thing and used a lot of brake clean all over it, rattle canned it Chevy orange. Still looking pretty good 8 years later.
I did this while it was out of the car replacing a bunch of gaskets and such. No way I'd do all that with it still in the car.

Autozone Chevy Orange spray cans, fortunately on a clean engine from the shop. Usually wipe it down with carb cleaner and spay.
