What is the best/prefered method for hooking a BBC to a hoist to install the motor. I have a leveler for it as well for tilting. I've dropped/pulled a few small blocks but never a heavy BB. It is also going into a '67 which is a tight fit with the oil pan and the trans will NOT be attached.

  • Is it safe to use a lift plate on top of the intake?
  • Lift it from the heads?
  • Is there a way to do it without heads on the block?

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

thanks
jim

I always use a leveler and the heads. I would be a bit leary of lifting with the intake if it is alum. But cast iron wouldn't be a problem in my opinion. However, if you want to use the leveler, you need to use the heads so you have the ability to tilt the engine. The leveler will have trouble doing so if hooked into a lifting plate on the carb flange.

I just stabed my 454 in my 66 just last week. I have a 8 3/4 quart MOROSO deep sump oil pan. I just used a chain and a cherry picker. I bolted the chain on the front of one head and on the back of the other. Without the trans I didn't need to tilt it. Tie your headers in the engine compartment with some wire or tie wraps. That's the best tip I could give you. Then just lower the engine straight down into the mounts. I put one bolt through and then lifted up on the engine until the other hole lined up.
It took my friend and I maybe 20 minutes.

Good luck laterman--Josh

I have done it both ways. Without the heads, I used a couple old head bolts in opposite corners of the block, with a chain between them. If heads are on, use whatever accy. holes in the front, and tranny holes in the opposite back side. And a lift plate on the intake works like a charm too....I was nervous at first, but after lifting up and down a couple times, I didnt even think about it.

When I pulled my motor, I took off the intake and used the front accy hole in the drivers head, and the last intake bolt on the pass head. Worked good and never thought about giving.

a picture is worth a thousand words.

Bolts are in the front and back of the heads. Across from each other.

Always have used the leveler but tonight dropped in my new engine with plate and went in slick as a whistle! Of course no trans! Good luck with your project!

That's what I need. An old Cast intake. Lifting a motor with a tripower or an original old Winters intake.... AAAAAAHHHHHHH!

I really like the carb plate, after 25 + years of pulling motors with various chain variations it's by far the best.
Exactly my method! With an aluminum intake, and note that the Merlin block is heavier than a GM.
Think about it...a complete iron headed BB weighs maybe 700 lbs. That's less than 175 lbs per bolt...well within it's limits!

I like using lift plates that bolt to the carb pad. They are excellent!

I use a single plane intake, so I take a car trailer axle strap wrapped under the intake plenum and hook it to the hoist. Works mint...I know the carb plates are shown to work fine...just made me nervous and the axles strap I have is rated at 1650 lbs.
