Best is to do a leakdown with the piston in several different positions. I had an engine that had decent leakdown numbers at TDC, but moving the piston down the bore just a little bit the leaddown was 93%(!) When I tore it down I found some deep scratches in the walls just below where the rings were @ TDC.

This was a manual so I could lock the crank. Not sure what you'd do with an automatic?
