Hey all, I have a '70 Chevelle with a 454. I finally got the car running and drove it a little bit. Thats when I ran into a problem I hadn't thought about. At about 7600 RPM the alternator belt decided to leave the engine compartment. I've been trying to find some billet aluminum deep groove pulleys, but I can't find any that match my current pulley configuration. The pulley set up I have is supposed to be out of a '70 to a '72 Chevelle but did not come with my car. I am running the long water pump, the alternator is on the passenger side of the car, and does have power steering. The aternator pulley is a single row and measures 2-5/8", I found one of these at a swap meet. The water pump is a 2 row and measures 6-1/4". The crank pulley is a 3 row and measures 7-3/4". I would like to keep my current pulley configuraton, but am willing to change. I am not using my power steering pump at this time but may decide to put it back on. Any help, comments or anything would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am having this issue as well. The last time at the track I threw the belt during a burnout and had to back out of the lane.
I couldn't find anything that really would suit my needs so I bought the large aluminum pulley that Summit offers and machined it to fit over the fan on my alternator. It's a 5" pulley with deep groove which should bring my alternator RPM down from 15000+ RPM at 6000 engine RPM to around 8000 RPM. That along with the deep groove should eliminate the issues. If you have access to a metal lathe or know a machinist it would be worth looking into.

march pulleys, i have the same pulley set up and the march pulleys that have the smaller crank pulley slowed the water pump and alt and power steering pump all down to where they belong. just slowing the alt down might not solve your problem and if you put the power steering back on it dosen't need to be turned to 7600rpm. i have the becool radiator and edelbrock waterpump and a clutch fan setup with no over heating in 100 degree temp stop and go traffic.

I just used a GM reproduction deep groove puley on my atlernator and left the rest of the pulleys as the stock set up.

I'm not going to get into a debate here but suggest you speak to Stewart water pumps or JonesRacing Products

http://www.jonesracingproducts.com/

they pbly will tell you to run a smaller water pump pulley than crank to allow the pump( need quality pump) to cool better at idle ......... they have a ratio they can calc for you based on your current parts ...... alt , same thing depends on what alt you have and how much output it has at low rpm ........assume all for street / strip car ......... Not a big fan of March look good but !! Deep groove GM stuff lined up right should be fine for belt throwing issues ........cooling and charging problems can be cured with the correct ratio pulleys than don't wear funny in a serious perf car ........ go for hardened CNC aluminum pulleys correctly machined ...may not be the shiney stuff but will work properly

Thanks for the info guys. I will give Jones racing a call. I'm not necessarily looking for flash, just function. The alternator pulley I bought is a deep groove. If I buy a deep groove water pump pulley and use my stock crank pulley will it help alleviate my problem? Thanks again fo rthe help.

Yes sounds like a good plan as long as your crank pulley a deep groove version and of course all pulleys in alignment .... call Jones first.

Thanks for the info. I looked at the the jones racing web site, but didn't see anything on there like what I have. If I could ever get off work on time I'll give them a call. A buddy of mine suggested a serpintene set up. What are ya'll thoughts on them? I would kinda of like it to look some what factory. Thanks again for the help.
